Chapter 13

The county courthouse was surrounded by media trucks and satellite dishes as the trial of the State versus Arthur Miller and Clara Vance officially commenced. Inside the towering marble courtroom, the air was thick with anticipation. Sarah sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Marcus and Chief Henderson, her posture straight and resolute.
Judge Evelyn Vance took her seat behind the bench, her expression grim and professional. The jury of twelve local citizens filed into the box, their faces serious as they absorbed the weight of the gravity of the proceedings.
The district attorney stood up to deliver his opening statement. He walked slowly in front of the jury box, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," the prosecutor began, "this case is not merely about a failed marriage or a bitter divorce. It is about calculated greed, premeditated betrayal, and a cold-blooded attempt to bury a living woman beneath the earth while guests celebrated an illusion of love."
In the defense section, Arthur stared blankly at the mahogany table, refusing to look up toward the gallery. Clara sat beside him, her hands tightly clenched in her lap, whispering frantic objections to her public defender whenever the prosecutor mentioned the offshore financial accounts.
When the prosecution called its first witness, the courtroom fell into an even deeper, more profound silence.
"The State calls Sarah Miller," the bailiff announced.
Sarah stood up from the gallery. She smoothed down her dark skirt, took a deep, steady breath, and walked forward to the witness stand. She placed her hand on the worn leather Bible, swore to tell the truth, and took her seat facing the jury.
The prosecutor approached the witness stand with calm confidence. "Mrs. Miller, please describe for the court the events of your wedding day—specifically, the hours leading up to the ceremony."
Sarah looked directly at the jury, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of fear. "On the morning of our wedding, Arthur prepared a cup of herbal tea for me in the kitchen. Within twenty minutes of drinking it, I felt dizzy, my limbs went numb, and I lost consciousness. The next thing I remember was waking up in total darkness, buried beneath several feet of damp soil, struggling to draw my first breath of air."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Arthur gripped the edge of the defense table so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. Clara buried her face in her hands, finally realizing that no amount of legal maneuvering could save them from the overwhelming truth of what they had done.
