Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the immaculate white folding chairs of the outdoor wedding venue. Floral arches of white roses and baby’s breath framed a freshly dug, ominous patch of dark earth sitting disturbingly close to the altar. Guests in pastel dresses and tailored suits murmured in hushed confusion as nine-year-old Lily burst down the central aisle. Her dark hair was tied into bouncing pigtails, her blue dress stained with damp grass, and her yellow cardigan tangled. She clutched a heavy blue backpack to her chest. Tears tracked through the dust on her cheeks as she screamed for her father, her voice cracking with terror.

Arthur, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, stared at his daughter with a mask of icy detachment. Next to him stood Clara, her blonde hair pulled back into a sophisticated chignon, wrapped in an expensive white lace wedding gown. Clara’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unbridled fury.

"Dad, mom needs help!" Lily cried, her small frame trembling violently as she reached the altar.

Clara stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she grabbed Lily’s arm with enough force to bruise. "Your mother is gone! Stop ruining our wedding!" Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with venomous rage.

Arthur did not defend his daughter. He merely adjusted his tie, his gaze shifting away from Lily toward the silent crowd of invited guests. Panic seized Lily’s chest. She wrenched her arm free from Clara’s tight grip, turning away from the altar and bolting toward the manicured garden bushes at the edge of the property.

"Please save my mother!" Lily sobbed, her cries echoing off the white folding chairs.

Without a backward glance, she threw herself onto her knees directly beside the freshly dug patch of earth. Ignoring the manicured lawn, she plunged her bare hands straight into the dark soil. The dirt was damp and smelled of turned earth and old leaves. She clawed frantically, tearing away roots and rocks as wedding guests rose to their feet in absolute shock.

"Dad and my stepmother did this to her! Call police!" Lily screamed into the dirt, her fingernails breaking against the compressed ground.

Then, beneath the weight of her desperate digging, a tiny, pale hand broke through the surface of the soil. A cold shiver rippled through the gathered crowd. Arthur took a half-step forward, his face draining of all color. Clara gasped, her manicured hand flying to her mouth as the full horror of the situation settled over the pristine garden. Lily kept digging, refusing to stop, determined to pull her mother back into the light.
