Chapter 8: The Ultimatum

The absolute stillness in the grand foyer was broken only by the sharp rustle of the legal papers in Marcus Sterling’s hand. For a terrifying second, Marcus’s confident facade cracked, revealing the calculated predator beneath the expensive bespoke suit. He recovered quickly, stepping forward until he was standing uncomfortably close to Julian. "You cannot simply terminate an engagement of this magnitude on a whim, Julian," Marcus warned, his voice dropping to a harsh, threatening whisper. "The social backlash, the dissolution of our joint philanthropic ventures, the withdrawal of my firm’s corporate sponsorship from your upcoming tech acquisitions—you will be financially crippled before the quarter ends." David Vance stepped up beside Julian, his expression hard. "Let’s talk about financial exposure, Marcus. Why don't we discuss what happens when the board of directors sees high-definition security footage of your niece physically assaulting an innocent staff member in broad daylight?" Marcus blinked, his gray eyes narrowing as he glanced sideways at Victoria. Victoria’s face drained of color, her eyes darting between her uncle and Julian. "That’s a fabrication," Victoria stammered, her voice losing its previous composure. "The girl was clumsy; she dropped the tea tray and fell on her own accord. They are lying to smear my reputation!" Julian slowly pulled a sleek tablet device from his breast pocket, tapping the screen twice before turning it toward Marcus and Victoria. The high-definition video of the sunroom incident began to play silently on the display, capturing every detail of Victoria’s aggressive stance, the shattered porcelain, and the bruised face of Clara standing nearby. The timestamp and audio waveform were clearly visible in the corner of the screen. Marcus stared at the tablet, his legal mind racing as he calculated the catastrophic fallout if this footage leaked to the press or the board of directors. A public scandal involving domestic violence and abuse of power would destroy his firm’s reputation overnight, let alone Victoria’s standing in high society. "This... this is an internal domestic dispute blown out of proportion," Marcus muttered, his voice tightening defensively. "It has no place in a legal proceeding." "It has every place in a legal proceeding," Julian replied coldly, stepping closer to Marcus with an intense, commanding presence. "You have five minutes to gather your associates, pack your briefing folders, and leave this estate. If you or Victoria attempt to contact me, my staff, or any member of my legal team again, this footage goes straight to the national press and the district attorney’s office." Marcus stared at Julian for a long, tense moment, realizing he had severely miscalculated his opponent. Julian was not an emotional groom throwing a tantrum; he was a strategic adversary holding all the winning cards. Marcus turned sharply toward Victoria, grabbing her arm with a firm, unyielding grip. "We are leaving," Marcus said through clenched teeth. Victoria tried to protest, but the look in her uncle’s eyes silenced her instantly. Gathering their briefcases, the legal team retreated toward the front doors, the heavy oak slamming shut behind them with a definitive thud.
