Chapter 3: Whispers in the Corridors

Downstairs in the vast, subterranean domain of the household staff, the atmosphere was thick with anxiety and cautious optimism. The news of Julian’s confrontation with Victoria had spread through the basement corridors with the speed of wildfire. In the immaculate industrial kitchen, Marcus, the veteran head chef, leaned against the stainless-steel prep table, arms crossed over his sturdy chest. Several junior kitchen hands and housemaids gathered around him, speaking in hushed tones about the future of the estate. "I saw him look at her," whispered Sarah, a young scullery maid whose eyes were wide with a mix of fear and excitement. "Mr. Vance didn't blink once. He looked like a man ready to tear down the whole west wing." Marcus grunted, adjusting his white apron. "Mr. Vance is a gentleman, but gentlemen in his position usually look the other way when high-society ladies throw their tantrums. They care about appearances, not bruised cheekbones." The heavy swinging door creaked open, and Clara walked into the kitchen. Silence fell instantly. Every eye turned toward her, noticing the white medical tape now partially covering the cut near her cheekbone. Marcus immediately stepped forward, pulling out a chair for her near the warmth of the large brick oven. "Sit down, child. Are you alright? We heard Mrs. Sterling went on a rampage over the tea service." Clara managed a tired, reassuring smile as she sat down, leaning back against the wooden chair. "I am holding up, Marcus. Mr. Vance was... surprisingly kind. He brought me to his study and listened to what happened." A murmur of surprise rippled through the gathered staff. For months, Julian had been an elusive figure, frequently traveling for international corporate acquisitions and charity boards, leaving the day-to-day management largely in the hands of Victoria. They had viewed him as distant, perhaps indifferent to their struggles. "Did he say anything about Mrs. Sterling leaving?" asked Thomas, the senior footman, stepping out from the pantry with a crate of fresh linens. "He told her to get out of his house," Clara replied softly, her words carrying the weight of a monumental shift. "And he meant it." The kitchen staff exchanged knowing glances. For the first time in memory, someone had stood up to the oppressive regime that Victoria had established. Yet, beneath the rising hope, a collective anxiety remained. Victoria Sterling was not a woman who would simply pack her designer bags and walk away quietly. She possessed deep financial ties, ruthless social connections, and an ego that viewed any public rejection as an unforgivable insult. Marcus shook his head slowly, staring into the flickering flames of the oven. "Enjoy the moment of justice, everyone, but keep your eyes open. People like Victoria don't lose gracefully; they plot their revenge in the shadows." The warning hung heavily in the air, reminding them that the storm had only just begun.
