Chapter 5: An Unexpected Ally

While Victoria plotted in the foyer, Julian was deep in conversation with a very different kind of visitor in his study. Shortly after Clara departed for the kitchen, another knock sounded at the door—this one familiar and urgent. Julian opened it to reveal David Vance, his younger cousin and a senior partner at the Vance family’s philanthropic foundation. David slipped into the room quickly, locking the heavy door behind him. "I heard about the sunroom incident before I even pulled my car into the driveway," David said, running a hand through his dark hair. "The gossip travels fast among the catering vendors outside. Is it true you threw Victoria out of the main rooms?" Julian walked back to his desk, gesturing for David to take a seat. "I told her to leave my house, David. And I meant every word. The woman has been terrorizing the staff for months, and I turned a blind eye because I was too focused on the global expansion portfolio." David exhaled a long breath, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. "Julian, you need to understand the legal complications. Victoria’s uncle, Marcus Sterling, has been positioning her to take a controlling stake in our domestic trusts. If you break off the engagement formally without airtight documentation of her misconduct, their legal team will drag us through a protracted, highly public court battle that could tank the foundation’s public funding." Julian leaned back in his leather chair, his expression hardening. "Let them try. I have spent the last hour reviewing internal security logs and speaking directly with Clara. The physical assault on a staff member is documented on the security cameras near the eastern corridor." David’s eyes widened with surprise. "There’s footage?" "Crystal clear," Julian replied quietly. "Victoria thought the cameras in the sunroom were disabled during the renovation last month. She was mistaken. Our IT director routed a backup feed directly to my private server." A slow, approving smile spread across David’s face. "That changes everything. But we need to move before Marcus Sterling arrives. I received a tip that he was heading this way with accelerated asset transfer papers." Julian stood up tall, buttoning the single button of his tuxedo jacket. His eyes flashed with a steely resolve that matched the polished silver on the desk. "Then we don't have a moment to lose. Let’s go down to the lower quarters and brief Marcus and the rest of the staff. It’s time to restore order to this house, from the foundation up."
