Chapter 7: The Arrival of Marcus Sterling

True to his word, exactly one hour after his phone call with Victoria, Marcus Sterling’s sleek black sedan rolled up the gravel driveway of the Vance estate and came to a sharp halt beneath the grand portico. The heavy brass knocker on the front door pounded twice before Thomas, maintaining absolute professional composure, pulled the door open to reveal the older, impeccably tailored lawyer standing on the threshold. Marcus Sterling did not wait for an invitation; he strode into the grand foyer with the practiced arrogance of a man accustomed to bullying his way through corporate boardrooms. He was flanked by two junior legal associates carrying leather briefcases stuffed with legal filings. Victoria emerged from the parlor almost immediately, her face painted with a triumphant smirk as she rushed to greet her uncle. "Uncle Marcus, thank you for making it so quickly," Victoria said, her voice carrying across the marbled entrance hall. "Julian has barricaded himself in his study like a petulant child." Marcus patted her hand patronizingly, his cold gray eyes scanning the grand staircase. "Calm yourself, Victoria. Emotions have no place in business or marriage. Where is Julian?" Before Victoria could answer, the double doors of the eastern hallway opened, and Julian walked out into the foyer, flanked by David Vance. Julian’s black tuxedo was immaculate, his dark wavy hair neatly styled, and his expression completely unreadable. "I am right here, Marcus," Julian said, his voice cutting through the cavernous space with absolute clarity. "And you are trespassing on private property." Marcus offered a thin, patronizing smile, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles as he stepped toward Julian. "Let’s not use dramatic language, Julian. Victoria is my niece and your intended wife. We are here to finalize the administrative adjustments to the estate management contracts, ensuring that future domestic friction is handled... professionally." Marcus signaled to one of his associates, who immediately unzipped a leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of papers bound with red ribbon. "These documents grant Victoria co-signatory rights over all household staff appointments and domestic budgeting," Marcus continued, his tone smooth and manipulative. "Sign them now, and we can all pretend today’s unfortunate misunderstanding never happened." Julian did not even glance at the offered papers. Instead, he stopped ten feet away from Marcus, his hands resting naturally at his sides. "I will not be signing anything of the sort, Marcus. In fact, our engagement is officially terminated, effective immediately." The silence in the foyer grew so heavy that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like a drumbeat. Victoria’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock.
