Chapter 8

The tinny audio recording echoed off the mahogany bookshelves, playing back Evelyn’s cold, calculated voice outlining the framing of her own daughter-in-law. With every passing second, the color drained entirely from Arthur’s face. He looked down at the tiny plastic device as if it were a venomous snake, then slowly turned his gaze toward his mother.

Evelyn sat rigidly in her high-backed leather chair, her fingers tightening around the stem of her scotch glass until her knuckles turned chalk-white. The theatrical sorrow and righteous indignation had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened glare of pure contempt.

"You recorded me," Evelyn whispered, the venom in her tone cutting through the lingering audio static. "You actually went through my private belongings like a common thief."

"I was looking for my sanity, Evelyn," Elena replied, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "You spent years tearing down every boundary your son tried to build, and when I refused to submit to your control, you tried to steal my child by framing me for abandonment. You are a sick, manipulative woman."

Arthur stepped forward, his breathing ragged and shallow. The psychological foundation upon which he had built his entire adult life was crumbling into dust before his eyes. "Mother... is this true? Did you... did you forge those papers? Did you plant that bag?"

Evelyn stood up slowly, her posture stiff and unyielding. She refused to cower, even now. "I did what had to be done, Arthur! Look at her! She was going to take you away from me, just like your father tried to do before he finally saw sense and left. I protected this family. I protected you."

"Stop it!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist down onto the mahogany desk so hard that the crystal scotch glass tipped over, spilling dark liquor across the papers below. The sudden explosion of sound made both women flinch, but Arthur’s rage was entirely directed inward at his own blindness. "For thirty-five years, you’ve manipulated every relationship I’ve ever had. You drove away everyone who ever cared about me, and tonight, you tried to steal my wife and my son!"

"I am your mother!" Evelyn shrieked, finally losing her composure as the thin veneer of civility shattered completely. "You are nothing without me! You would still be lost in the dark if I hadn't guided your every step!"

"I am done being guided," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper that terrified them both. "Pack your things, Mother. Tonight."
