Chapter 7

With the digital recorder clutched tightly in her palm, Elena felt a surge of resolved courage. She unlatched the nursery door and stepped out into the hallway, finding Arthur still leaning against the wall with his head in his hands. He looked exhausted, the weight of the evening crushing his broad shoulders. When he heard her footsteps, he looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with silent remorse.

"Elena," he began, standing up slowly. "I didn't mean to hurt you downstairs. I was just... I was panicked."

"Save the apologies, Arthur," Elena said, her voice entirely devoid of fear. She bypassed him, walking with steady purpose down the stairs toward the study where Evelyn was undoubtedly celebrating her victory. "It’s time we had a real conversation. All three of us."

Arthur followed closely behind her, sensing the fundamental shift in her demeanor. The timid, defensive woman he had manhandled an hour ago was gone, replaced by someone dangerous and immovable.

They pushed open the heavy oak doors of the study to find Evelyn seated behind the mahogany desk, sipping her scotch with an air of untouchable elegance. She looked up lazily, raising an eyebrow as the young couple entered her domain.

"Still playing at dramatics, I see," Evelyn remarked, swirling the amber liquid in her glass. "Arthur, I thought I told you to keep her upstairs until she calmed down. She clearly hasn't regained her senses."

"The only one who lost their senses is you, Evelyn," Elena said clearly, walking right up to the edge of the desk. She placed the small digital recorder squarely in the center of the polished wood, right next to the manila folder.

Evelyn’s eyes flickered down to the device. For the first time all evening, the older woman’s immaculate composure faltered, a microscopic twitch of her jaw betraying her sudden panic.

"What is that ridiculous little toy?" Evelyn asked, though her voice lacked its previous authority.

"Press play, Arthur," Elena instructed quietly, not breaking eye contact with her mother-in-law. "Listen to the voice of the woman who raised you, and hear the truth about who really tried to tear our family apart."

Arthur looked between the two women, his hand trembling as he reached out and pressed the small black button on the face of the recorder. The room fell into absolute, breathless silence as Evelyn’s recorded voice began to fill the study, detailing every calculated lie from the past week.
