Chapter 3

The tension in the room grew thick enough to choke on as Arthur weighed his wife’s earnest plea against the physical proof resting in his hands. Evelyn stepped back, adjusting the collar of her dark patterned dress, maintaining the composed, dignified facade of a wronged matriarch. She knew her son’s psychological vulnerabilities better than anyone alive; she had spent thirty-five years ensuring he remained emotionally dependent on her approval.

"Arthur, think about your father," Evelyn murmured softly, deploying the ultimate emotional weapon in her arsenal. Her tone shifted from aggressive to sorrowful, a masterclass in manipulation. "He kept secrets from me, too. He packed bags behind my back. Look where that led us. I am only trying to protect my family from the heartbreak I had to endure."

Arthur flinched at the mention of his late father, a phantom whose mistakes loomed large over his entire childhood. He looked down at Noah, who finally woke up, letting out a soft yawn and blinking sleepily against the harsh overhead light of the dining room. The sight of his son’s tiny face short-circuited Arthur’s rising anger, replacing it with a dull, pervasive ache.

"Put the baby down, Elena," Arthur said quietly, his voice devoid of warmth. "Let’s sit down at the table and talk about this rationally. No more yelling. No more hiding things."

"I am not putting Noah down," Elena replied firmly, stepping backward toward the hallway leading to the back stairs. "Not in this house. Not while your mother is dictating every breath we take. Arthur, you need to wake up. She doesn't just want to protect us; she wants to control every aspect of our lives, just like she controlled yours."

Evelyn let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "Do you hear her, Arthur? She insults me in my own home after physically assaulting me. If you let her walk out that door tonight, she will take my grandson away forever, and you will never see him again. Choose. It’s her or me."

The ultimatum dropped like a guillotine blade. Arthur looked at his mother, then at his wife, realizing the trap had closed completely around him. He felt like a boy again, standing in the middle of domestic warfare he was never equipped to win.

"Nobody is leaving tonight," Arthur declared, stepping forward to block the hallway. "We are staying right here until I figure out the truth. Hand me the baby, Elena. Just for a moment."

Elena shook her head, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "No, Arthur. You're looking at me through her eyes. If you take Noah, I will never get him back."
