Chapter 14

The study felt entirely different now—stripped of Evelyn’s oppressive presence, bathed in the warm autumn sunlight streaming through the clean windows. Arthur, Elena, and Thomas Vance sat around the mahogany desk. Thomas placed a weathered leather folio on the wood, opening it to reveal yellowed legal documents and a thick stack of personal letters.
"Your mother told you your father walked out on us because he was unstable," Thomas began, his voice shaking slightly with long-repressed emotion. "She made sure everyone in the family, and the courts, believed he abandoned his parental duties."
"That’s what she wrote in her journals," Arthur said quietly, leaning forward. "She said he couldn't handle the pressure of family life."
"It was a lie, Arthur," Thomas said firmly, sliding a document across the desk. "Your father didn't leave voluntarily. He was planning to divorce your mother because he discovered she was embezzling from his architectural firm to fund her social ambitions. When he confronted her with proof and announced he was taking you away to protect you from her psychological abuse, she threatened to lock him up in a psychiatric facility using her family’s political connections."
Elena gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as the terrifying parallels clicked into place. "She tried to do the exact same thing to me."
"He packed a bag that very night," Thomas continued, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Just like your wife’s bag last month. He was going to take you to safety. But your mother intercepted him in this very room. There was a struggle—the police report was suppressed, classified under seal by a judge who owed your mother’s family a favor. Your father died of a sudden heart attack right here on this floor during that argument."
The silence in the study was absolute. Arthur stared down at the documents, his breath catching in his throat as thirty-five years of fabricated history dissolved into thin air. The guilt he had carried for decades—the belief that he was the son of a coward who had abandoned him—vanished, replaced by the profound realization that his father had died trying to save him.

"She rewrote history," Arthur whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "She made me believe I was the problem, all so she could keep me under her thumb forever."
"She’s a master of control, Arthur," Thomas said gently, closing the folio. "I kept these records safe all these years, waiting for the day you were strong enough to handle the truth. I think you’re strong enough now."
