Chapter 7

The private security room in the basement of the estate was usually reserved for monitoring the perimeter gates and the sprawling acreage surrounding the property. It smelled of warm electronics, dust, and ozone. Graham sat in the leather swivel chair before a bank of high-definition monitors, his fingers flying across the keyboard to access the internal archive files. Nora stood behind him, her good hand resting lightly on the back of his chair, while Evelyn remained upstairs, locked in her sitting room, refusing to answer calls or messages.
“Here,” Graham murmured, bringing up the timestamp for late afternoon on the previous day.
The screen flickered to life, showing the upper landing of the grand staircase from a discreet wide-angle lens mounted near the crown molding. The footage was crystal clear, capturing every detail of the opulent hallway. For the first two minutes, nothing happened. Then, the door to the secondary study opened, and Evelyn emerged, walking with her characteristic deliberate stride toward the head of the stairs.
A moment later, Nora appeared on screen, carrying a silver tray with a porcelain bowl of soup, carefully stepping up toward the second-floor landing where Evelyn was standing.
Graham leaned closer to the monitor, holding his breath. On screen, Evelyn turned as Nora approached, engaging her in a brief conversation. You couldn't hear the audio, but you could read the rigid posture of Evelyn’s body and the polite, conciliatory tilt of Nora’s head. Then, as Nora shifted the tray to take the final step onto the landing, Evelyn’s left hand shot out with terrifying speed.
The video showed the older woman’s fingers digging into Nora’s upper arm, spinning her slightly off balance before a hard, decisive shove sent the young woman pitching forward. The silver tray flew from Nora’s hands, followed by the shattering bowl and the violent, tumbling descent down the wooden steps.
Graham’s hands dropped from the keyboard. The breath left his lungs in a long, shuddering hiss. He stared at the glowing screen, watching the looped playback of the shove over and over again, as if forcing his brain to accept a reality it desperately wanted to reject. The absolute coldness of Evelyn’s movements on the screen—the lack of hesitation, the calculated precision of the push—destroyed the last remaining shreds of his familial loyalty.
“You see it,” Nora whispered, her voice cracking slightly as the memory of the fall rushed back with the visual confirmation. “I didn't slip, Graham. She tried to kill me.”
Graham closed his eyes, pressing the heels of his hands against his face. A deep, agonizing groan escaped his throat. He had defended his mother for years against minor slights, excused her toxic commentary, and convinced Nora to be the bigger person. But this was attempted murder, captured in 4K resolution by a security system installed to protect the family from outside threats, not from within.

“I’m sorry,” Graham whispered, his voice thick with a mixture of grief and blinding rage. “I am so, so sorry.”
He reached out, his hand finding Nora’s uninjured fingers and squeezing them tightly. The evidence was absolute, but what came next would tear their lives apart completely.
