Chapter 1

The grandfather clock in the grand foyer chimed once, a heavy, resonant sound that seemed to vibrate through the polished mahogany of the staircase. At the bottom of the steps, Nora lay crumpled against the risers. The cream satin of her dress, usually immaculate, was stained with a dark broth from the spilled porcelain bowl that now lay shattered beside her hip. Her dark wavy hair was splayed out across the lower step, framing a face pale and smeared with dust and tears. A jagged purple bruise bloomed along her left cheekbone, matching the angry scrape across her bare shoulder where the rough wood had bitten into her skin during the descent. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps as her chest rose and fell beneath the ruined fabric.
At the top of the stairs, Evelyn stood frozen, her beige satin jacket catching the harsh light of the crystal chandelier. Her manicured hands were raised in a gesture of absolute horror, her pearl necklace rising and falling rapidly against her collarbone. Just beside her, Graham stared down in stunned silence, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead, his black suit looking rigid and formal against the domestic catastrophe. The silence between them was thick, heavy with unspoken accusations and the sudden, terrifying shift in their orderly lives.
Nora blinked hard, forcing her tear-blurred eyes to focus on the figures looming above her. Every muscle in her body ached, a dull, throbbing pain radiating from her ribs and right arm. She swallowed hard, tasting copper and salt. With a weak, trembling movement, she lifted her chin, her gaze locking onto Graham’s shocked face. The words felt like broken glass in her throat, but she forced them out, her voice a fragile, trembling whisper that barely carried up the stairwell.
“She pushed me.”
Evelyn’s hands dropped instantly, her expression twisting from shock into a mask of frantic denial. Her voice, usually so measured and cool at these high-society charity functions, cracked with sudden panic.
“Oh my god! Nora slipped.”
Graham turned his head slowly, looking from his mother’s wide, panicked eyes down to his wife’s broken form on the steps. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched near his temple. He ignored the spilled food and the broken china, focusing entirely on the raw terror etched into Nora's features. The weight of the family name, the unspoken rules that governed their lives in this sprawling estate, suddenly felt completely irrelevant compared to the cold dread settling in his stomach. He took a hesitant step downward, his polished leather shoe clicking sharply against the wood.

“Mom... what happened?” Graham asked, his voice low and dangerous, demanding an answer that neither woman was entirely ready to give.
Nora looked up at him, her eyes welling with fresh tears as she realized the steep mountain she had to climb just to be believed in her own home. Evelyn stepped forward, her heels clicking a defensive rhythm. The battle lines of the household had just been redrawn in blood and satin.
