Chapter 8

The amber light in the VIP lounge seemed to grow heavier, pressing down on the four occupants as Robert Vance stared numbly at the glowing tablet screen. The numbers scrolling past were damning—millions of dollars siphoned from Vance Shipping into unverified overseas accounts, all bearing Marcus’s digital signature and authorization stamps. Robert sank heavily back into the leather armchair, his weathered face suddenly looking lined and exhausted, the formidable corporate titan reduced to a broken father grappling with the catastrophic consequences of his own ambition.
“I pushed her into this,” Robert whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming remorse as he looked up at Elena. Tears welled in the corners of his tired eyes, tracing deep grooves down his cheeks. “I thought I was securing her future, protecting the family name from the market downturn. I never imagined... I never dreamed he was capable of violence. When you mentioned the bruise last night, I thought you two had just had a normal pre-wedding argument. God help me, Elena, I was so blind.”
Elena felt the hard knot of anger in her chest soften just a fraction at the sight of her father’s genuine breakdown. For years, their relationship had been defined by boardrooms, mergers, and emotional distance. Seeing him brought low by the very deception she had tried to warn him about bridged a chasm that had divided them since her mother’s passing. She stepped forward, the rustle of her white wedding dress cutting through the quiet room, and placed a gentle hand on her father’s trembling shoulder.
“We can’t change yesterday, Dad,” Elena said softly, her voice carrying a strength that surprised even herself. “And we can’t fix the wedding. But we can control how this story ends. Marcus thinks he can run away and hide behind his lawyers, but Julian’s forensic team has already locked down his corporate assets. We need to go public on our own terms before the tabloids turn this into a circus.”

Clara nodded in immediate approval, stepping further into the warm light of the room. “Elena is entirely right, Robert. If we get ahead of the narrative—if you release an official statement tonight announcing the immediate termination of the business partnership and the cancellation of the wedding due to newly discovered financial fraud and personal misconduct—we cut the legs right out from under him. He won't have time to liquidate the remaining stolen capital.”
Julian tapped the table near the tablet, his expression severe. “My legal team is already drafting the injunctions. By midnight, Marcus’s bank accounts will be frozen in three different jurisdictions. He will be a ghost with an empty wallet.”
