Chapter 6

The metallic clatter of the diamond band hitting the marble floor sounded disproportionately loud in the cavernous emptiness of the ballroom. Clara watched the ring roll a few inches before coming to a rest against the base of a shattered champagne glass, the sparkling facets catching the unforgiving light overhead. Elena did not look down at the discarded symbol of her aborted marriage. Her gaze remained locked on Julian, whose expression shifted from cold calculation to a strange, contemplative respect. For the first time all evening, the older man offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod of acknowledgment—not an apology, but an admission that Elena had handled a catastrophic situation with far more fortitude than the man she had nearly married.

“You have every right to be furious, Elena,” Clara said gently, breaking the heavy silence that settled over the remaining trio. Clara’s beige dress rustled softly as she stepped past the scattered crystal shards, closing the distance to the bride. “What Marcus did—both to you last night and here today—goes far beyond the bounds of human decency. Julian and I will ensure that the financial dissolution of his partnership with our firm is swift, absolute, and utterly unforgiving. He will not walk away from this with a single cent of leverage.”

Elena exhaled slowly, the last remnants of her morning panic finally dissipating into cold, hard resolve. “I don't want his money, Clara. I just want my life back. I want my father to understand what kind of monster he invited into our family under the guise of a strategic alliance.” At the mention of her father, Elena’s expression tightened. Her father, corporate titan Robert Vance, was currently sequestered in the private VIP lounge upstairs, waiting to make his grand entrance for the reception toast, blissfully unaware that his carefully constructed empire of alliances had just imploded on the ballroom floor.

Julian finally broke his silence, his voice deep and resonant. “Robert is upstairs believing he has secured the future of his shipping legacy,” Julian noted grimly, adjusting the cuffs of his black suit. “He is a proud man, Elena, and a stubborn one. But he is also a father. When he sees what that miserable coward did to your face, and when he reads the forensic audit reports I have on my tablet concerning Marcus’s embezzlement from the joint accounts, Robert’s pride will shatter faster than that glass.”

Elena looked at the older man, recognizing the dangerous machinery of corporate warfare operating behind his eyes. Julian was not an ally out of the goodness of his heart; he was an apex predator who hated being lied to or manipulated by amateurs like Marcus. Yet, for tonight, their interests aligned. They needed to dismantle the lie before the media got wind of the scandal.
