Chapter 2

The echo of Julian’s question seemed to vibrate against the carved mahogany walls of the ballroom, refusing to dissipate into the cavernous space. Marcus stood frozen near the edge of the dais, the golden liquid inside his champagne glass rippling slightly from the tremor in his hand. His white tuxedo jacket, tailored to absolute perfection, felt suddenly stifling. He kept his gaze firmly fixed downward, watching the tiny bubbles rise and burst within the flute, desperately avoiding the searing, accusatory glare that Julian directed his way. Julian, his black suit immaculate and devoid of a single wrinkle, stepped closer to the groom, closing the physical distance with slow, predatory deliberation.
Elena watched the exchange with a cold, aching clarity. The bruising beneath her eye throbbed in rhythm with her pulse, a constant physical reminder of the night before, when the illusion of her fairytale romance had been violently dismantled behind closed doors. She had believed Marcus was weak, manipulated by the formidable financial and social empire wielded by Julian, his long-time mentor and primary business backer. Yet, as Julian’s piercing eyes demanded an answer, a sickening realization settled into the pit of Elena’s stomach. Marcus was not merely a passive bystander in this web of intimidation; he was intricately tied to the dark compromises that kept Julian’s corporate machine running.

Marcus finally lifted his chin, though his eyes darted nervously toward the towering exit doors at the far end of the hall. His breathing was shallow, his lower lip trembling with a restrained panic that completely undermined the confident demeanor he had projected during the morning ceremony. “It wasn't supposed to happen like this,” Marcus muttered, his voice barely audible over the faint hum of the venue’s central air conditioning. The admission, small and cowardly, was an outright confession.
Julian’s expression hardened further, the lines around his mouth deepening into a mask of pure disgust. For all of Julian’s ruthless business tactics and cold public persona, a strict personal code governed his actions—a code that Marcus had clearly violated in the most cowardly manner imaginable. Julian took another step forward, towering over the younger man. The silence that followed was broken only by the muffled sounds of the catering staff whispering in the distant service corridors, entirely unaware that the high-society wedding of the season had devolved into a silent tribunal of exposure and undeniable guilt.
