Chapter 5: Digital Footprints

In a modest, brightly lit diner three towns over, Grace sat in a corner booth nursing a lukewarm cup of black coffee. The neon sign outside flickered rhythmically, casting long, crimson shadows across the Formica tabletop. Her smartphone lay flat between her hands, the screen illuminated now as she scrolled through a encrypted cloud storage folder that Arthur had insisted she set up months prior. It was a secure digital vault containing personal memos, audio logs, and scanned copies of documents that the rest of the board assumed had been destroyed.

Her finger tapped on an audio file labeled simply: October 14 - Night.

She plugged a pair of white earbuds into the phone, pressing them firmly into her ears before hitting play. The static hissed for a second before Arthur’s familiar, raspy voice filled her head, sounding weaker than she remembered, yet carrying an unmistakable urgency.

“If you’re listening to this, Grace, it means the paperwork they’re waving in your face has already surfaced. Eleanor has been moving assets through shell companies in the Caymans. She thinks I’m too far gone to notice the missing millions in the R&D fund. She’s got Mark wrapped around her finger—or so she thinks. Be careful who you trust, sweetheart. The rot goes deeper than the executive suite.”

Grace closed her eyes, fighting back the burning sensation behind her eyelids. Her father’s words confirmed every lingering suspicion she had harbored during his final months of declining health. The sudden onset of his illness, the rapid isolation from old friends and advisors, and the aggressive takeover spearheaded by Eleanor—it was all part of a calculated, multi-year conspiracy to strip the family name of its legacy and leave the remnants to the vultures.

A shadow fell across the table, breaking her concentration. She looked up to see Thomas standing by the booth, holding a brown paper bag containing a warm slice of apple pie. He slid onto the vinyl bench opposite her without waiting for an invitation.

"You found something on that phone, didn't you?" Thomas asked softly, his weathered eyes searching her face.

Grace slowly removed one earbud, letting it dangle against her navy blue dress. "I found enough to put them both behind bars, Thomas. But first, we need to get back inside the house before they wipe the physical archives."
