Chapter 12: Rebuilding the Foundation

By mid-morning, the police had completed their initial sweep of the study, and the forensic accountants had arrived to begin the exhaustive process of auditing the corporate ledgers. Sunlight flooded through the massive windows of the grand foyer, warming the polished hardwood floor where the broken picture frame had finally been swept away by the cleaning crew.
Grace walked alone through the expansive hallways of the estate, carrying a cardboard box filled with personal items she had retrieved from her old office upstairs. The heavy burden that had weighed on her shoulders since her father’s passing seemed to have lifted, replaced by the daunting yet exhilarating task of steering the Vance family enterprise back toward its founding principles of integrity and innovation.
She stopped outside the double doors of the formal study, taking a deep, steady breath before stepping inside. The room had been tidied up; the desk blotter was clean, and the oil portrait of her great-grandfather hung straight and true once more against the paneled wall.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out to find a text message from the lead corporate attorney confirming that the emergency injunction freezing all of Eleanor’s fraudulent asset transfers had been successfully approved by a federal judge. The company was secure, and the path forward was entirely in her hands.
Thomas appeared in the doorway, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a small, unbroken wooden frame he had found tucked away in the estate’s archives downstairs. He stepped into the room and placed it gently on the edge of the desk.

"Found this in the back storeroom, Miss Grace," Thomas said with a warm, genuine smile. "It’s a picture of your father and you from when you were just ten years old. Before all the corporate noise took over."
Grace looked down at the photograph. In it, her father stood smiling in the sunlight on the very terrace outside, his arm wrapped warmly around her shoulders.
