Chapter 4: Shadows of the Study

Back inside the sprawling mansion, the tension between Eleanor and Mark had escalated from quiet hostility to a verbal standoff. The heavy mahogany doors of Arthur Vance’s private study stood open, revealing a room that looked as though it had been subjected to a meticulous, hurried search. Books were pulled slightly askew on their shelves; the leather desk blotter was stained with spilled ink that had long since dried.

Mark paced the length of the Persian rug, his grey shirt damp with nervous sweat at the collar. He stopped in front of the massive oak desk where Arthur had spent his final decades managing an empire that spanned three states. "You think you’ve won, Eleanor, but you left the back door wide open. Grace isn't as naive as you and the board seem to believe. She knows the layout of this estate better than anyone, and she knows where the real ledgers are kept."

Eleanor crossed her arms, leaning back against the edge of a mahogany bookcase with an air of studied indifference. She smoothed the front of her beige blazer, her expression cold and calculating. "Grace is a ghost in this house now, Mark. Legally and socially. The board has ratified every transfer of power, and the probate court will stamp the filings by Monday morning. What she feels or what she thinks she knows is entirely irrelevant to the bottom line."

"Is it?" Mark stepped closer, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. "What happened in dad's study on the night he signed the revised codicil? Because I’ve checked the security logs, Eleanor. The cameras in this hallway were disabled for exactly forty-two minutes. The exact window of time you were locked in here with him while he was barely conscious."

Eleanor’s facade faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of genuine panic flickering across her pale features before she slammed the door shut on her emotions. She pushed off the bookcase, standing her ground with an icy dignity. "You are treading on very dangerous ground, Mark. Accusations without proof will get you nothing more than a swift exit through those same front doors."
