Chapter 9: The Grand Meridian Gala

The Grand Meridian ballroom was a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, dripping with crystal chandeliers, polished brass accents, and an overwhelming scent of expensive perfume and imported champagne. Hundreds of the city’s elite—politicians, CEOs, real estate moguls, and cultural icons—mingled beneath the towering ceilings, their laughter and polite chatter blending into a dull, continuous roar of self-congratulatory excess. At the far end of the room, standing upon a raised dais backed by a massive LED display screen, Victor Vance held court. He was an older man with silver hair combed meticulously back, wearing an immaculate tuxedo and flashing a practiced, charismatic smile as he accepted handshakes from admiring sycophants.
The double oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open, and the ambient noise dipped noticeably as Nathan and Madam Zhao entered together. Nathan walked with a steady, unhurried stride, his burgundy tuxedo jacket buttoned tightly and his expression carved from absolute resolve. Beside him, Madam Zhao commanded immediate attention in her emerald-green silk dress, her silver phoenix embroidery catching the crystal light like shards of ice. They did not head toward the mingling crowd; instead, they moved with deliberate purpose down the center aisle, heading straight for the front row of seats directly beneath the dais.

Several prominent developers and city council members stared in open shock as they recognized Nathan, whispering frantically among themselves. Word had spread through financial circles that Nathan’s company was facing imminent liquidation, and seeing him walk into the premier charity event of the year looking composed and confident sent a visible ripple of unease through the room. Vance stopped mid-sentence while shaking hands with a municipal judge, his sharp eyes narrowing as he spotted Nathan and Madam Zhao approaching the front row. The practiced smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he quickly plastered it back onto his face, though a muscle twitched dangerously near his left temple.
Nathan took a seat in the front row, crossing his legs casually and resting his hands on his knees. Madam Zhao remained standing beside him, her hands folded neatly over her small silk clutch, her gaze fixed entirely on Vance with an intensity that made the older man visibly sweat beneath the warm stage lighting. Vance cleared his throat into his lapel microphone, the amplified sound echoing loudly across the hall. "Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention please," Vance announced, his voice smooth and resonant as he stepped up to the central podium. "We are moments away from unveiling the cornerstone of our city's future development plan..."
