Chapter 13: Rebuilding the Foundation

The following morning, the golden sunlight poured generously through the large, arched windows of Nathan's newly reinstated corporate headquarters overlooking the financial district. The office was spacious, minimalist, and bathed in a warm, natural glow that felt entirely different from the sterile white marble of Madam Zhao's foyer or the dim amber shadows of the Grand Meridian ballroom. Nathan sat behind his executive desk, reviewing the final clearance documents on his tablet screen while the soft, cheerful sound of children's laughter drifted in from the adjoining private lounge area.
Lily was sitting on the plush rug of the lounge, coloring inside a large picture book while Marcus sat nearby, casually tossing a small tennis ball back and forth with her to keep her entertained. The dark circles under Lily's eyes from the trauma of the previous days had faded, replaced by the rosy glow of a happy, secure child who knew her world was safe once again. Nathan locked his tablet screen and leaned back in his leather chair, letting out a long, slow breath as he felt the last remnants of chronic stress leave his shoulders. He had survived the crucible, and more importantly, he had protected his daughter.
The heavy oak office door opened without a knock, and Madam Zhao stepped into the room. She wore a tailored white pantsuit with subtle silver detailing, abandoning the traditional qipao for a modern, professional aesthetic that signaled a complete break from her past persona. She carried a sleek leather portfolio under her arm, walking with the same measured grace that had defined her entrance in every previous scene. Nathan stood up immediately from his desk, gesturing politely toward the seating area by the window. "Please, have a seat, Zhao. Coffee, water, or something stronger?" he offered warmly.

Madam Zhao offered a polite, closed-lip smile as she took a seat by the window, setting her leather portfolio on the glass coffee table. "Water will be fine, Nathan," she replied, her dark eyes drifting toward the lounge area where Lily was currently showing Marcus a multicolored drawing of a house with a large green yard. "She looks well. Better than she did in the foyer." Nathan walked over, pouring a glass of ice water and placing it gently on the table before taking the opposite seat. "She's resilient. Children bounce back much faster than adults, provided they know they are loved and protected," Nathan said softly, glancing toward his daughter with deep affection.
Madam Zhao took a slow sip of water, setting the glass down before opening her leather portfolio. "I came to finalize the remaining administrative transfers regarding the old industrial properties Vance used as collateral," she said, her tone businesslike yet devoid of its former chill. "The city council has approved the conversion of those warehouse lots into a public community park and youth center—funded jointly by my holding group and your restored enterprise." Nathan raised an eyebrow in pleasant surprise, leaning forward with genuine appreciation. "A park? That's quite a departure from corporate real estate acquisitions." Madam Zhao looked out the window toward the sprawling city skyline, her expression serene. "Sometimes the best way to bury the past is to plant something new over the ashes."
