Chapter 10: The Unraveling

Victor Vance projected an aura of absolute invincibility as he began his keynote presentation, clicking through slide after slide of gleaming futuristic skyscrapers, pristine public parks, and high-speed transit hubs that promised to revitalize the downtown core. The audience listened with rapt attention, occasionally bursting into polite applause whenever Vance highlighted a particularly lucrative municipal grant or tax exemption. From the front row, Nathan watched the presentation with cold detachment, counting down the minutes in his head while keeping his eyes locked on the digital audio-video control booth located at the back of the balcony level.
Madam Zhao shifted slightly, leaning down to murmur quietly into Nathan's ear. "Marcus has bypassed the primary firewall in the control booth. The synchronized upload script is locked and loaded. All we need is your signal to initiate the override," she whispered, her voice steady and completely devoid of nervousness. Nathan gave a subtle nod, keeping his posture relaxed. Up on the stage, Vance was reaching the climax of his speech, building toward the formal announcement of the multi-billion-dollar asset acquisition that would cement his monopoly over the city's real estate market for the next three decades.
"Tonight, with the cooperation of our esteemed municipal partners and the unwavering support of our financial leadership, we officially finalize the acquisition of the industrial sector's remaining independent portfolios," Vance declared grandly, spreading his arms wide to encompass the cheering crowd. "This milestone represents a new era of prosperity, built on transparency, integrity, and absolute progress." As Vance reached for the remote clicker to display the final legal acquisition contract on the massive LED screen behind him, Nathan raised his right hand and tapped his index finger twice against his knee.

High above the crowd in the audio-video control booth, Marcus hit the enter key on the master terminal. The massive LED screen behind Vance instantly blinked black, cutting off the gleaming architectural renderings of futuristic skyscrapers. A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom as the bright images were replaced by raw, high-resolution scans of the 1994 police report detailing the warehouse fire, complete with the suppressed margin notes identifying Victor Vance as the mastermind behind the arson and insurance fraud. The murmurs in the audience swelled into a deafening wave of shocked confusion and chaotic chatter.
Vance turned around slowly, his face draining of all color as he stared up at the giant screen displaying the irrefutable evidence of his decades-old crimes. He fumbled with his remote clicker, desperately trying to shut off the display, but the system had been completely locked down by Marcus’s override script. Sweat beaded instantly along Vance’s hairline, ruining his immaculate composure as he turned back to face the ballroom, his eyes scanning the crowd in blind panic until they locked onto the front row, where Nathan and Madam Zhao sat watching him with unblinking, statuesque calm.
