Chapter 11: The Reckoning

Chaos erupted inside the Grand Meridian ballroom within seconds. Journalists scrambled for their cameras, municipal officials hastily distanced themselves from the podium, and whispers of outrage ricocheted off the crystal chandeliers. Victor Vance gripped the edges of the wooden podium so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white, his breathing shallow and erratic as he realized his multi-decade empire of deceit was collapsing in real time. He grabbed his lapel microphone, his voice cracking with desperate authority as he tried to regain control of the room. "Ladies and gentlemen, please! This is a malicious fabrication! A desperate stunt by a bankrupt corporate saboteur trying to deflect from his own financial failures!" Vance shouted into the mic, his polished veneer completely shattered.
Nathan stood up slowly from his front-row seat, buttoning his burgundy tuxedo jacket with deliberate care. He walked down the center aisle toward the base of the dais, the crowd parting instinctively before him as the weight of his presence commanded absolute silence. Madam Zhao followed closely behind him, her emerald-green silk dress rustling softly against the carpet, her expression carved from stone. Nathan stopped at the bottom of the steel steps leading up to the podium, looking up at the man who had tried to destroy his life, his startup, and his family out of sheer greed.
"You called it a fabrication, Victor, but every document displayed on that screen bears the state seal and the verified signatures of the investigators you bribed thirty years ago," Nathan said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom without the aid of a microphone. "You built your entire fortune on the ashes of innocent people, framing rivals, manipulating markets, and using fear to keep everyone around you compliant." Vance took a stumbling step backward away from the podium, his face twisting into a mask of pure venom. "You have nothing, Nathan! You're a penniless nobody playing detective with stolen files!" Vance snarled, lunging toward the side exit stairs behind the stage.

Before Vance could reach the heavy backstage doors, two burly men in tailored black suits stepped out from the shadows of the wings, blocking his path entirely. Vance slammed to a halt, turning frantically toward the other exit, only to find two more guards standing shoulder-to-shoulder, completely sealing off his escape route. These were his own private security detail—the men he had hired to protect him, now standing motionless under Madam Zhao's command. Vance whirled around to face the edge of the stage, his chest heaving as he realized he was completely trapped with nowhere left to run.
Madam Zhao ascended the steps of the dais with slow, majestic grace, her silver phoenix embroidery catching the harsh stage lighting. She stopped two feet away from Vance, looking down at the trembling man who had once been her mentor and protector. "You told me my brother died of negligence, Victor. You used my grief to build your prison," Madam Zhao said, her voice chillingly quiet yet carrying the force of a tidal wave. She raised her hand and delivered a sharp, echoing slap across Vance's cheek that silenced the entire ballroom. Vance staggered sideways, catching himself against the edge of the mahogany podium as the reality of his utter defeat finally settled over him like a shroud.
