Chapter 9: Behind Locked Doors

The security guard at St. Jude’s Medical Center eyed Marcus with open suspicion as Julian marched past the front desk, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line. Marcus followed closely behind, his expensive suit rumpled and his usual corporate arrogance replaced by a tense, nervous energy.

"Mr. Vance, you're not scheduled for a visitation today," the desk nurse said, standing up as they approached the double doors leading to the psychiatric wing.

"I don't care about the schedule," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "I need to speak with my wife. It's a legal emergency concerning our children."

Before the nurse could object, a familiar voice drifted down the corridor.

"Let them in, nurse."

Dr. Harrison, the senior psychiatrist who had overseen Rebecca’s intake, stepped out of Room 104, wiping his hands with a small paper towel. He looked at Julian and Marcus with tired, discerning eyes. "She's been asking for you both, actually. It seems her plan is entering its final phase, and she wants front-row seats to the aftermath."

Julian pushed past the doctor without a word and shoved open the heavy door to Room 104.

Rebecca was sitting up in bed again, but this time she wasn't wearing the hospital gown. She was dressed in her own clothes—a dark blue sweater and black trousers—and her hair was neatly combed. A small overnight bag sat packed on the metal chair beside her. The seventy-two-hour hold had expired, and according to the discharge papers clipped to the nurse's clipboard, she was free to leave.

"You look stressed, Julian," Rebecca said, offering a serene, almost chilling smile as she looked up at her husband. "And Marcus, darling. You shouldn't have rushed down here on my account."

Marcus stepped into the room, his face flushed with anger. "Drop the act, Rebecca. You forged my signature on the custody petition. You set the whole thing in motion to tear us apart."

Rebecca tilted her head, her dark eyes glittering with a strange, triumphant light. "I didn't forge anything, Marcus. You signed a general power of attorney regarding corporate asset protection three years ago. All I did was utilize a legal loophole you conveniently forgot existed."

"You used an innocent child as a weapon," Julian stepped forward, his hands gripping the metal footboard of the bed so hard his knuckles turned white. "You had social services take Lily away from her home. How could you do that to a seven-year-old girl who loves you?"

"She isn't yours, Julian!" Rebecca finally screamed, the mask of calm shattering instantly as she lunged forward, her face twisting in rage. "She is the living, breathing proof of everything that is rotten between you and your perfect little corporate life! Every time I looked at her, I saw his face. Every time she laughed, I heard the lie you both built around me!"

The room fell dead silent, save for the hum of the overhead light fixture. Rebecca breathed heavily, her chest heaving as she slumped back against the pillows, her manicured fingers clawing at the blue blanket.

"Sign the retraction, Rebecca," Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, steady whisper. "Sign the emergency custody retraction right now, or I swear to God I will spend every dime I have making sure you never see the light of day outside an institution again."

Rebecca looked up at him, a twisted, bitter smile playing across her lips. "You're too late, Julian. The judge signed the temporary placement order twenty minutes ago. Lily is already on her way to a state-approved guardian."
