The drive back from Oakridge Facility was quiet, the car stereo playing a low, soothing instrumental track that matched the steady rhythm of the windshield wipers clearing away a light drizzle. Julian felt a strange sense of closure settle over his chest. His conversation with Rebecca hadn't erased the past, nor had it magically healed all the scars, but it had lifted the heavy anchor that had been dragging him down for months.
When he pulled into the driveway of his home, the lights were on, casting a warm, inviting glow across the wet pavement.
Inside, Sarah was helping Lily and Leo clear their dinner plates from the kitchen island while chattering about their upcoming school science fair.
"Dad's home!" Leo announced, dropping his sponge into the sink and running over to give Julian a quick hug around the waist as he walked through the back door.
"Hey, buddy. How was school?" Julian asked, lifting Leo off the floor for a brief second before setting him back down.
"Good! My volcano experiment got an A-plus," Leo beamed.
