Chapter 7: The Unravelling

The sound of Sarah’s frantic footsteps echoed down the staircase as she reached the bottom landing, taking in the sight of Detective Miller standing in the foyer with her leather briefcase.
"Julian, what is happening?" Sarah asked, her voice sharp with sudden panic as she instinctively pulled Lily and Leo back toward the warmth of the living room archway.
"It's alright, Sarah," Julian said, forcing a terrifying calm into his posture as he turned back to face the social worker. "Just... give us five minutes, Detective. I need to explain to my sister what is happening before you question the children."
Detective Miller checked her watch, her expression tight with professional sympathy. "Five minutes, Mr. Vance. Not a second more. My supervisor is waiting in the vehicle outside."
Julian nodded stiffly and walked past her into the living room where the twins stood huddled together. Lily looked up at him with wide, anxious eyes, clutching the corner of Sarah’s cardigan. She could sense the tension vibrating in the air, the invisible threads of their safe little world snapping one by one.
"Listen to me, kids," Julian knelt down, taking both of Lily’s small hands in his. His palms were clammy, but his grip was firm and steady. "A nice lady from the city is here to ask us some questions about our family. You don't need to be scared. You just answer her questions honestly, and then daddy is going to take care of everything. Okay?"
"Are we in trouble?" Leo asked, his lower lip trembling slightly.
"No, buddy. You aren't in trouble at all," Julian said, swallowing the heavy lump in his throat. He looked up at Sarah, whose eyes were swimming with unshed tears. "Sarah, take them out to the back patio. Keep them occupied with their coloring books."
As Sarah hurriedly ushered the twins toward the sliding glass door leading to the garden, Detective Miller stepped into the living room, her notebook already open in her hand.
"I appreciate your cooperation, Mr. Vance," Miller said, taking a seat on the edge of the sofa. "Let's make this quick. According to the state registry update filed by Dr. Harrison's office three days ago, there is a formal contestation regarding Lily's biological paternity. Until a formal DNA adjudication is settled by a family court judge, the state cannot permit the children to remain under contested guardianship."
"Contested by whom?" Julian demanded, leaning over the back of an armchair. "Rebecca is in a psychiatric ward, and I am the only father these children have ever known."
"An emergency petition was filed early this morning by legal counsel representing Mr. Marcus Sterling," Miller replied smoothly, watching Julian's reaction with professional detachment. "He has presented documentation asserting biological paternity and requesting immediate emergency custody of the minor female pending further family court proceedings."
Julian felt as though he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer. Marcus. After all his talk about keeping his distance, after promising to leave Lily out of the crossfire, Marcus had launched a preemptive legal strike to seize custody.
"He's a stranger to her," Julian whispered, the betrayal burning hot and bitter in his chest. "She doesn't even call him uncle. She doesn't know him."

"The law recognizes biological rights, Mr. Vance," Miller said, closing her notebook with a crisp snap. "And right now, the law dictates that Lily cannot stay under your roof while her biological father is petitioning the court for custody. I'm afraid I have to take her into temporary administrative foster placement this afternoon."
