Chapter 8: A House Without Laughter

The front door clicked shut, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt physical. Julian stood alone in the center of the living room, staring at the empty space on the sofa where Detective Miller had been sitting just moments before. Lily had gone with the social worker without crying, her brave little face trying to be strong for her father, promising that she would see him soon. But Leo had stayed behind with Sarah, screaming and kicking as they tried to explain why his sister had to leave in a stranger's car.
Julian’s phone buzzed aggressively on the coffee table. He walked over slowly, picked it up, and saw Marcus’s name flashing across the screen.
Without thinking, Julian swiped to answer and brought the phone to his ear. "If you ever show your face near my home again, Marcus, I swear to God I will tear your life down to the studs."
"Julian, listen to me," Marcus's voice came through the speaker, tight, strained, and laced with genuine panic. "I didn't file that emergency petition. I never authorized my attorneys to seek custody of Lily."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Oh, stop it, Marcus! The social worker was standing right here in my living room holding the paperwork with your signature on it. You went behind my back to steal my daughter!"
"I swear to you on my life, I didn't sign those papers!" Marcus shouted over the line, his voice cracking with emotion. "My legal team called me an hour ago saying a restraining order and custody motion had been filed under my name through an expedited proxy signature. Someone forged my credentials, Julian!"
Julian froze, the anger momentarily receding to make way for a cold, calculating realization. "A proxy signature? Who has access to your legal seal?"
"Rebecca," Marcus whispered, the truth finally dawning on both of them across the miles. "She must have filed the paperwork before she was admitted to the hospital, setting it on a timed release with our corporate counsel's office just in case her attack failed."
Julian closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the cool glass of the windowpane. Rebecca hadn't just tried to attack Lily in a fit of mad rage; she had orchestrated a meticulous, multi-layered trap designed to blow up both of their lives simultaneously. By forcing Marcus’s hand through a forged custody filing, she had guaranteed that Julian would turn on Marcus, that the state would step in, and that the family they had built together would be completely destroyed.
"She's still controlling us," Julian said, his voice barely audible. "Even locked inside a psychiatric ward, she's pulling the strings."
"We need to go see her," Marcus said firmly. "Together. We need to get her to sign an emergency retraction before the family court judge signs off on the temporary placement order this afternoon."
Julian looked toward the stairs, thinking of Leo upstairs crying in Sarah's arms, and of Lily sitting in some sterile state facility waiting for a father who wasn't legally allowed to claim her.

"Meet me at St. Jude's in twenty minutes," Julian said, cutting the call before Marcus could reply.
