Chapter 6: The Ghost in the Machine

The progress bar on the navigation console inched forward, the bright green numbers reflecting off the glass of the windshield like a digital constellation. Every second the transmission held, another piece of Montgomery’s sprawling financial and criminal empire dissolved into the archives of military intelligence. Shell companies in the Cayman Islands, unauthorized arms shipments routed through civilian ports, and encrypted communications with international brokers were being systematically cataloged and flagged for immediate asset seizure.

A high-pitched chime interrupted the hum of the bridge. An incoming signal flashed on the secure military terminal: Acknowledgment received. Standby for operational extraction team.

I let out a slow, measured breath. The heavy knot of tension that had coiled in my chest since the moment Montgomery cornered me in the penthouse finally began to unwind. But the job wasn’t finished yet. The yacht was still moving at twenty knots, cutting through the swells, and Montgomery was still locked in the walk-in closet three decks below, slowly coming to terms with his new reality.

The helmsman sat rigidly in his leather chair, his hands flat against the polished wood of the console, too terrified to blink.

"Who are you really?" he whispered, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to maintain composure. "Montgomery said you were just some heiress he picked up in Geneva."

"Montgomery believes what his ego permits him to believe," I said, leaning against the edge of the navigation table. "He saw an emerald dress and a quiet smile. He forgot to check the background."

Before the helmsman could reply, the heavy security door at the base of the bridge stairs hissed open. Heavy footsteps pounded up the steel grating. Two more of Montgomery’s elite security detail burst into the room, assault rifles raised, breathing heavily from their climb. They froze when they saw the helmsman immobilized at the console and me standing near the comms array with the metal bat in my hand.

"Drop the—" the lead guard began, raising his rifle barrel toward my chest.

He didn't get to finish the command. I dropped low, sweeping the heavy metal bat in a vicious horizontal arc that connected with the barrel of his weapon, knocking it violently aside. As he stumbled off balance, I drove the butt of the bat upward into his chin. He dropped instantly, unconscious before he hit the deck.

The second guard hesitated, his finger twitching on the trigger. In that fraction of a second, the heavy steel door behind him slammed shut and locked automatically from the outside. A synthesized voice chimed from the overhead speaker: Bridge lockdown initiated. Secure mode active.

The backup signal from my tactical drive had overridden the local access controls, sealing the bridge off from the rest of the vessel. The second guard stared at the flashing red light above the door, then slowly lowered his weapon, realizing he was entirely trapped with someone who had just dismantled his partner with effortless precision.

"Sit down on the floor," I told him, pointing with the bat. He complied immediately.
