Chapter 14: The Horizon Clears

The flight to Marseille was long, smooth, and uneventful. I sat by the window in first class, watching the endless expanse of clouds give way to the rugged, sun-drenched coastline of southern France. Below, the Mediterranean Sea sparkled like blue glass, calm and deceptive under the afternoon sun.
It was the same ocean I had crossed a week ago aboard Montgomery’s yacht, but the water looked different from up here—vast, neutral, and entirely indifferent to the human dramas played out upon its surface. Montgomery was currently sitting in a maximum-security federal holding facility outside Washington, facing a lifetime of indictments that would ensure he never saw the deck of a luxury vessel again. His empire had vanished like foam on a receding tide.
I opened my briefcase and pulled out the dossier for the Marseille assignment. The target was a man named Varga, a maritime broker who believed his operations were invisible because he kept his hands clean of direct violence. He didn't know about me yet. He didn't know that a quiet woman in a tailored suit was already walking his way, turning his own infrastructure against him.
The plane’s seatbelt sign chimed gently as the captain announced our final descent into Marseille-Provence Airport. The wheels touched down on the tarmac with a smooth, practiced bump, and the jet taxied toward the terminal under the golden glow of the European afternoon.
I gathered my belongings, zipped my briefcase, and stepped off the aircraft into the bustling arrivals terminal. The air here carried the scent of roasted coffee, pine, and sea salt. It was a completely different continent, a completely different life, yet the core of who I was remained entirely unchanged.
I walked through the sliding glass doors of the airport and into the warm Mediterranean breeze. A black sedan was idling curbside, its driver holding a small digital placard bearing my new operational alias. I approached the vehicle without hesitation, opened the door, and slid into the leather-trimmed interior.

The driver didn't speak; he simply put the car in gear and pulled smoothly out into traffic, merging into the coastal highway that wound its way toward the city. I looked out the window, watching the shimmering blue expanse of the sea stretch out beside us, steady and endless.
I was back in the field, exactly where I belonged.
