Chapter 12: Re-entry

The San Diego naval base loomed ahead, a sprawling complex of gray concrete docks, dry docks, and administrative towers standing resolute against the California coast. The transport boat glided smoothly into its assigned berth, sliding against the rubber bumpers with a soft, muffled thud.

Several men and women in crisp naval uniforms stood waiting on the pier, their postures rigid and professional. At the center of the group stood Director Hayes, the man who had authorized my deep-cover assignment three years ago when Montgomery’s syndicate first popped up on the agency's radar as a national security threat.

The transport secured its lines, and the rear gate lowered to form a sturdy ramp. I stepped out onto the concrete dock, my emerald heels clicking sharply against the gray surface. The morning air here smelled of warm asphalt, salt, and old engine oil—the familiar scent of a working world.

Director Hayes stepped forward, his weathered face breaking into a rare, approving smile. He looked me up and down, noting the emerald dress, the composure, and the total absence of hesitation in my posture.

"Agent Vance," Hayes said, extending a hand. "Word is you handled things out in international waters with your usual flair."

I shook his hand firmly. "Montgomery overestimated his leverage, Director. Men like him always do when they mistake obedience for weakness."

"The asset freeze is complete," Hayes said as we began walking toward the main administration building, flanked by two security personnel. "The financial data you downloaded has already triggered simultaneous raids in Geneva, Zurich, and the Cayman Islands. His entire network is collapsing before he even steps foot in a federal holding cell."

"And the transcripts?" I asked.

"Classified, sealed, and locked away," Hayes replied. "As far as the public record is concerned, Montgomery was arrested for international maritime fraud and money laundering by federal authorities acting on an anonymous tip. Your cover remains intact. No one outside this room knows you were ever on that yacht."

"Good," I said. "I prefer the shadows anyway."

"Take a few days off, Vance," Hayes said gently as we reached the heavy glass doors of his office. "You earned every minute of it."

I shook my head slightly, stepping through the doors into the cool, fluorescent-lit corridor. "I don't need rest, Director. I just need a new assignment."
