CHAPTER 6: The Boardroom Confrontation

The high-rise glass boardroom of Hayes & Vance Engineering looked out over the glittering skyline of the city. Sitting around the long mahogany table were six high-profile investors, alongside David, the senior partner. At the head of the table sat Evelyn herself, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking like a queen presiding over a court.
She had leveraged her connections to secure a guest seat as an 'adviser' to the investment group.
When Julian walked into the room carrying a leather briefcase, Evelyn offered him a sweet, sympathetic smile—the ultimate fake display of maternal concern.
""Julian, dear,"" Evelyn spoke up softly, her voice filled with feigned sadness. ""You don't have to push yourself like this. We all understand that with your wife’s mental state being so... unstable... it’s best if you step down temporarily. For your own good.""
The investors nodded slowly, clearly influenced by her toxic narrative over the past two days.
Julian set his briefcase on the table, unbuttoned his suit jacket, and looked directly into his mother's eyes.
""Thank you for your concern, Evelyn,"" Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute confidence. ""But my home life is exceptionally stable, and my wife is recovering beautifully under proper medical care—care that was delayed because someone locked her inside her own home while she was ill.""
A quiet murmur ran through the room. Evelyn’s smile faltered slightly.
""Now, let's talk about the downtown bridge project,"" Julian continued, opening his laptop and projecting a complex 3D structural model onto the large wall screens. ""Over the past 48 hours, I conducted a complete stress-test simulation on our foundational designs. Not only are we three weeks ahead of schedule, but my team has identified a structural optimization that will save the investment group $4.2 million in raw materials while increasing load capacity by 15 percent.""
The investors leaned forward, instantly captivated by the data. For thirty minutes, Julian delivered a masterclass in engineering precision. He answered every technical question effortlessly, demonstrating unmatched expertise, absolute clarity, and unshakeable composure.
When he finished, the lead investor, a stern man named Mr. Henderson, stood up and clapped his hands gently.
""Brilliant work, Julian,"" Henderson said, looking over at David. ""I don't know where these rumors of 'personal instability' came from, but this man is clearly at the absolute top of his game. The project stays with Julian.""
Evelyn’s face turned pale. She opened her mouth to object. ""Mr. Henderson, as someone who knows Julian’s personal burdens—""
""Mrs. Hayes,"" Julian interrupted, his voice calm, cold, and razor-sharp. ""This is a corporate boardroom, not your living room. You hold no shares in this firm, and your personal opinions carry zero weight here. If you continue to defame my character or my wife’s health to my business associates, my legal team will file a formal tortious interference lawsuit against you by 5:00 PM today.""
The entire room went dead silent. The investors looked at Evelyn with sudden awkwardness and suspicion.
Evelyn sat rigid, her hands trembling under the table. She had lost. For the first time in her life, her authority had been publicly dismantled by the very son she thought she controlled.

""Meeting adjourned,"" Julian said smoothly, packing his laptop.
He walked out of the boardroom without giving his mother a second glance.
