CHAPTER 4: Whispers in the Shadows

For the next three days, quiet returned to the Hayes household, but it was an uneasy peace. Claire remained in bed, her body slowly recovering with proper nutrition, medication, and sleep. Julian took a temporary leave of absence from his engineering firm to take full responsibility for the house and the baby.
He learned how to warm bottles to the exact right temperature, how to soothe Noah’s late-night colic, and how to cook nutritious meals for Claire. For the first time in his life, Julian felt truly connected to his immediate family, away from the hovering shadow of his mother's expectations.
However, Evelyn was not a woman to accept defeat gracefully.
On Thursday afternoon, Julian’s phone rang. It was David, his senior partner at the engineering firm.
""Julian, we need to talk,"" David said, his tone unusually clipped and formal.
""Is everything okay at the office, David? I submitted my family leave request through HR.""
""It's not about the leave, Julian,"" David sighed heavily. ""Look... I just had a lunch meeting with two of our biggest real estate investors. They suddenly expressed deep concerns about your leadership on the new downtown bridge project.""
Julian frowned, sitting down at his desk. ""Concerns? I've delivered every milestone three weeks ahead of schedule. Why would they suddenly have concerns?""
""They received some... personal information,"" David hesitated. ""They were told that you are going through severe personal turmoil, that your home life is unstable, and that your wife is mentally unfit. They were advised that your attention is divided and that you might be on the verge of a personal burn-out.""
Julian’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. Evelyn. She couldn't attack him directly at home, so she was attacking his livelihood, using her network of wealthy socialites and business connections to sabotage his career.
""David, listen to me,"" Julian said, maintaining his composure. ""That information is coming from my mother. She is attempting to manipulate my personal life because I cut off contact with her due to domestic issues.""
""Julian, I don't care about family drama,"" David replied sternly. ""All I care about is the firm's reputation and our fifty-million-dollar contract. If the investors think you're unstable, I have to strip you of the Lead Engineer position on the bridge project.""
""David, give me forty-eight hours,"" Julian demanded, his voice firm. ""I will present the complete structural audit and show the investors face-to-face that the project is flawless. If I fail, you can fire me.""
Silence hung on the line for a long moment.
""Forty-eight hours, Julian,"" David finally agreed. ""Not a minute more.""
Julian hung up the phone and leaned back, rubbing his temples. Evelyn wasn't just trying to discipline him—she was trying to starve him out, to break him financially until he came crawling back to her, begging for forgiveness and control.
He looked over at the doorway. Claire was standing there, leaning weakly against the frame, holding Noah. She had heard everything.
""She's trying to ruin you because of me,"" Claire whispered, tears welling in her eyes again. ""Julian, maybe... maybe if I apologize to her...""
May you like
Julian stood up immediately, walked over, and pulled her gently into a hug.
""Don't you ever say that,"" Julian said fiercely. ""She is doing this because she is a bully who cannot tolerate losing control. We are not backing down, Claire. Not now. Not ever.""
