CHAPTER 2: Broken Foundations

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic and underlying anxiety. Julian paced the narrow hallway outside Room 204, his arms wrapped tightly around Noah, who was sleeping fitfully.
Doctor Vance, a tall woman in her mid-fifties with silver-streaked hair and sharp, empathetic eyes, stepped out of the room, pulling off her rubber gloves.
""Mr. Hayes?"" she called softly.
Julian stepped forward immediately. ""How is she, Doctor?""
""Physically, she’s stabilizing. Her blood iron levels are dangerously low—we're running an intravenous iron infusion right now,"" Dr. Vance explained, her tone serious. ""She’s also suffering from extreme physical exhaustion and dehydration. But what concerns me more, Julian, are the stress indicators. Her heart rate was elevated even while semi-conscious.""
Julian looked down at the floor, guilt weighing heavy on his shoulders. ""Her mother-in-law... my mother... was staying with us. She pushed her. Hard.""
Dr. Vance sighed gently, putting a reassuring hand on Julian’s arm. ""Postpartum depression and anemia are a dangerous combination, Mr. Hayes. Your wife’s body was literally shutting down under the weight of severe physical and mental strain. If she had been left alone for another few hours without help, we could be having a very different conversation right now.""
The words felt like a physical slap. Julian closed his eyes, remembering how many times Claire had tried to tell him that his mother was being too strict, too demanding. He had dismissed it as standard in-law friction. “She’s just trying to help, Claire,” he had said a hundred times. “She’s old school.”
He had been blind. blinded by the deeply ingrained belief that his mother was an infallible matriarch who only wanted the best for her family.
""Can I see her?"" Julian asked softly.
""Yes. But keep it brief. She needs rest.""
Julian walked quietly into the room. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the silence. Claire looked tiny in the high hospital bed, surrounded by white sheets and plastic tubes.
He pulled up a vinyl chair, sat down, and reached out to hold her hand. Her fingers were slightly warmer now.
""Julian,"" she whispered, her eyes opening slowly.
""I'm here, honey.""
""Is Noah okay?""
""He's right here, safe and sound,"" Julian said, gesturing to the baby carrier on the floor beside him. ""The doctor says you're going to be okay. But you need to rest.""
Claire looked up at the tiled ceiling, her expression hollow. ""She took my key, Julian. Before you came home... she locked the front door from the inside so I couldn't leave to rest. She said a real wife doesn't rest until the house is spotless.""
A cold, dark fury ignited inside Julian. It wasn't just overbearing behavior—it was cruelty. It was abuse.
""She will never step foot in our house again,"" Julian said, his voice deadly calm. ""I called a locksmith on the way here. The locks are being changed right now. I’ve also blocked her number on your phone.""

Claire looked at him, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and fear. ""She won't stop, Julian. You know how she is. She controls everything. Your father’s estate, your family's social standing... she’ll ruin you.""
Julian squeezed her hand gently, his decision made. ""Let her try. I don't care about the estate, Claire. I care about you and our son. My family is right here in this room.""
