CHAPTER 3: The Gathering Storm

The next morning, the sun rose over a chilly, overcast city. Julian had spent the night in the uncomfortable hospital armchair, waking up every hour to check on Claire and feed Noah. By 9:00 AM, the doctor officially discharged Claire with strict instructions for complete bed rest and continuous medical check-ups.
When Julian brought Claire and Noah back to the house, a brand-new brass lock was glinting on the front door. The locksmith had finished the job early in the morning.
As Julian carried Claire up the porch steps, a dark grey sedan pulled into the driveway with a screech of tires. The door burst open, and Evelyn stepped out, her face a mask of furious indignation. Behind her was Arthur, Julian’s older brother—a corporate lawyer who had spent his entire life serving as Evelyn’s enforcer.
""Julian!"" Evelyn barked, striding up the walkway with her designer heels clicking sharply against the concrete. ""What is the meaning of this? I came back to pick up my clothes, and the locksmith told me my key doesn't work!""
Julian set Claire down gently on the porch bench, keeping himself between his mother and his wife.
""Your key doesn't work because you don't live here, Evelyn,"" Julian said, his voice steady, devoid of the childish deference he had carried for thirty years. ""Your things are packed in the suitcases by the garage.""
""Evelyn?"" Evelyn gasped, placing a manicured hand over her chest. ""You address your mother by her first name now? Is this how that... that woman has brainwashed you?"" She pointed a sharp fingernail toward Claire.
""Do not point your finger at my wife,"" Julian stepped forward, his tall frame blocking Evelyn completely. ""You almost killed her yesterday. You left her unconscious on the floor while you sat two feet away eating dinner.""
Arthur stepped up beside his mother, fixing Julian with a practiced, intimidating lawyer glare. ""Julian, calm down. Mom was just trying to instill some discipline and structure. Claire has been neglecting her duties as a wife, and—""
""Shut up, Arthur,"" Julian cut him off sharply, turning his glare onto his brother. ""You don't know a damn thing about what goes on in this house. You just do whatever Mom tells you so she keeps you in her will.""
Arthur’s face flushed red. ""Watch your tone, little brother. I came here as a peacemaker, but if you're going to be hostile, we can take legal steps. Mom has rights as a grandmother, and—""
""She has zero rights in this house,"" Julian said coldly. ""If either of you steps onto this porch again, I will file a restraining order for domestic abuse and elder harassment. I have the hospital records from last night, Arthur. I have the medical report showing her condition, and I have the police report filed for reckless endangerment.""
Evelyn froze. She had spent decades building a pristine reputation in high-society circles as a philanthropist and devoted family matriarch. The mention of hospital records and police reports hit her where it hurt most: her vanity.
""You wouldn't dare,"" Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling with hatred. ""You would destroy this family's name over a weak, useless girl who can't even handle a baby?""
May you like
""Watch me,"" Julian replied softly. He turned his back on them, picked up Claire in his arms, opened the door, and stepped inside, locking the heavy deadbolt behind him.
Through the frosted glass, he watched Evelyn and Arthur stand in silence for a moment before turning back to their car. The battle line was drawn, but Julian knew this was only the opening skirmish.
