Chapter 8: The Ultimatum

The heavy silence in the boardroom was broken only by the hum of the cooling fans inside the wall-mounted display server. Arthur Vance watched his daughter with a strange mixture of calculating pride and cold dread. For all his decades in the corporate arena, he had underestimated the monster he had created by molding Clara in his own image—only she possessed a ruthlessness unclouded by corporate ego.
Julian dropped into one of the leather conference chairs, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at the polished glass tabletop. The bravado that had fueled his betrayal, his smug dismissal of Clara on the driveway, and his partnership with Julianna had evaporated into thin air. "What do you want?" he muttered, his voice hollow and defeated. "If you drop those files to the D.A., we’re all going to prison. My family, Julianna, me—everything is gone."
"Not everything," Clara corrected, walking slowly back to her seat and resting her hands on the back of the chair. "Your freedom is gone. Your social standing is gone. But your lives are still technically intact—for the next sixty minutes."
Arthur narrowed his eyes, sensing the trajectory of her demands. "Clara, be reasonable. A public scandal of this magnitude will tank Vance Holdings stock by morning. We can settle this quietly through private arbitration, restructure the assets, and—"
"There will be no restructuring, Dad," Clara interrupted, her tone absolute and unyielding. She turned her gaze back to Julian and Julianna. "Here are your terms. You, Julian, will sign an immediate, unconditional annulment of the marriage on the grounds of fraud and bad faith, relinquishing all claims to any Vance assets, trusts, or future holdings. Julianna, you will draft a formal, notarized confession detailing your father’s involvement in the zoning bribery scheme and deliver it to the federal prosecutor’s office by twelve o'clock noon."
Julianna bristled, finding a shred of her former defiance. "And if we refuse? What stops us from going to the press with your family’s entire portfolio of crimes?"
"Nothing," Clara replied with a chillingly sweet smile. "Except the fact that if I go down, the decentralized dead-man’s switch triggers an automatic upload of every single document to every major news outlet, federal agency, and regulatory board simultaneously. My father loses his empire. Your father loses his license and his freedom. And you two spend the next twenty years paying off legal fees in a federal penitentiary."

She checked her wristwatch, the second hand ticking forward with agonizing slowness.
"You have ten minutes to decide whether you want to walk out of this building with your reputations superficially intact, or leave in handcuffs with the rest of us. The clock is running."
