Chapter 5: The Morning Ritual

The morning sun cut through the towering glass panels of the penthouse, casting long, geometric shadows across the white marble dining table. Arthur Vance sat at the head of the table, cutting into a poached egg with surgical precision. He wore a crisp navy suit, his silver hair neatly styled, projecting the image of a titan of industry entirely unburdened by familial drama.
Clara entered the dining room precisely at 8:00 AM. She wore a sharp, tailored black pantsuit that contrasted sharply with the ethereal white silk of her ruined wedding gown from the night before. Her golden hair was pulled back into a severe, immaculate chignon, and her face bore no trace of the tears that had stained her cheeks less than twelve hours earlier. She moved with a predatory grace, pulling out the chair directly across from her father and sitting down without a word.
Arthur looked up, a flicker of surprise crossing his features before his expression hardened back into professional detachment. "I see you recovered your composure. Good. The PR team arrives at ten to brief us on the talking points for the afternoon press conference. We are framing the separation as a mutual decision driven by conflicting career trajectories. Julian has already signed the non-disclosure addendum in exchange for a clean exit package."
Clara poured herself a cup of black coffee, her hand steady and unyielding. "Julian didn't sign anything of value, Dad. And he certainly isn't getting a clean exit."
Arthur paused, his knife hovering over his plate. He narrowed his eyes, studying his daughter with sudden, sharp scrutiny. "Explain yourself, Clara. This isn't the time for emotional games. The market opens in two hours, and our stock price depends on a seamless narrative."
"The market doesn't give a damn about our narrative once the federal indictment drops," Clara replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of her coffee. She set the porcelain cup down with a soft clink against the saucer. "Did you really think I spent the last three years playing the obedient housewife without keeping records of my own? Every shell company, every bribe paid to the zoning commissioner, every falsified safety report—it’s all backed up. Not on local drives, Dad. In a decentralized vault that requires my living heartbeat to keep from publishing."

Arthur’s face drained of color, the seasoned executive momentarily paralyzed by the sheer audacity of the threat. He slammed his fork onto the table, leaning forward over the mahogany surface, his voice dropping to a gravelly hiss. "You are playing with forces you don't understand, Clara. You destroy Vance Holdings, you destroy yourself. Your lifestyle, your trust fund, your entire existence is funded by this corporation."
"Good," Clara said, her smile cold and razor-sharp. "Then we’ll burn it down to the foundation together. Because as of today, I have nothing left to lose."
