Chapter 7: The Prosecutor’s Daughter

Julianna’s practiced, sweet smile vanished, replaced by a sudden flash of genuine hostility. She stepped away from Julian, crossing her arms over her gold metallic dress as she glared at Clara. "You think you can intimidate us with empty corporate threats? My father has a federal grand jury convening on Monday morning to review real estate fraud across the entire metropolitan sector. Your family’s empire is already a rotting corpse, Clara. We’re just here to scavenge the bones before the vultures pick them clean."

Arthur Vance didn't flinch, though his eyes flashed with cold fury at the blatant disrespect. He remained seated, his hands clasped neatly on the table. "Your father, Julianna, is a career bureaucrat who owes his current judicial appointment to campaign contributions funneled through Vance Holdings PAC funds. If he initiates an investigation into my company, he will inadvertently sign his own disbarment papers. Do you really think he hasn't signed off on every discretionary zoning waiver for the last decade?"

Julianna’s breath hitched slightly, the absolute certainty in Arthur’s voice striking a nerve. She turned sharply toward Julian, her eyes demanding reassurance. "He’s bluffing. Dad wouldn't risk his career for this family."

"Your father already risked his career the moment he accepted the offshore retainer fee deposited into your personal trust account last November," Clara said smoothly, pulling her phone from her pocket and tapping the screen twice. A file preview appeared on the massive wall-mounted monitor behind the conference table, displaying a digitized bank statement bearing Julianna’s signature and a routing number linked directly to a Cayman Islands shell company.

The color drained entirely from Julianna’s face. She lunged forward, instinctively reaching for the screen as if she could physically claw the evidence out of existence, but the monitor was locked behind a remote administrative firewall.

"Where did you get that?" Julianna hissed, her voice losing its polished composure, revealing the frantic panic underneath.

"From the same place I have every other transaction that proves you, your father, and my soon-to-be-ex-husband conspired to insider-trade municipal development bonds," Clara replied calmly, slipping her phone back into her pocket. "You thought last night was about a broken heart and a messy wedding, Julian? You and your little mistress were just the final catalysts needed to force my hand. I’ve been waiting for a reason to tear this whole rotten structure down from the inside."

Julian stared at Clara, the reality of the trap finally setting in. He realized with absolute, crushing horror that the weeping, waterlogged bride kneeling on the wet pavement the night before had never been a victim. She had been the architect of their mutual destruction, playing her part to perfection while waiting for them to walk willingly into the slaughterhouse.
