Chapter 6: The Uninvited Guest

The mahogany double doors of the Vance Holdings boardroom swung open with an echoing thud, interrupting the hushed murmurs of the corporate legal team gathered around the conference table. Arthur Vance sat rigidly at the head of the long glass table, flanked by two senior litigation attorneys who looked distinctly uncomfortable. The press conference was scheduled to begin in precisely forty-five minutes, and the narrative was supposed to be airtight.
Instead, Julian strode into the room unannounced, dressed in a fresh Tom Ford suit, his face flushed with unearned arrogance. Behind him trailed Julianna, clinging to his arm in her signature gold dress, looking like a trophy won fair and square. Julian hadn't expected to find Clara sitting calmly at the opposite end of the table, sipping mineral water as if she owned the building.
"Arthur, we need to renegotiate," Julian announced loudly, striding toward the head of the table without waiting for an invitation. "The settlement figure your lawyers drafted doesn't account for the consulting fees I'm owed for securing the municipal contracts for the south-side development."
Arthur’s jaw tightened visibly, a vein throbbing at his temple. He had spent the last hour trying to process Clara’s morning ultimatum while simultaneously managing the impending corporate implosion. "You signed the non-disclosure, Julian. The exit package is final. Sit down or get out."
Julian scoffed, leaning his palms against the glass table and leaning over toward Arthur. "Times have changed, Arthur. Julianna’s father reviewed the preliminary zoning filings this morning. Let’s just say there are a few... irregularities in the environmental clearance reports. Irregularities that could cost Vance Holdings its primary operating license if they were to accidentally leak to the district attorney."
Julianna offered a sweet, saccharine smile toward Clara. "Sorry about the abrupt ending last night, darling, but business is business. You were always a bit too fragile for this world anyway."
Clara did not blink. She slowly set her glass down, the silence in the boardroom stretching until it became suffocating. She stood up from her chair, smoothing the lapels of her black pantsuit with deliberate slowness, and walked around the length of the table until she stood directly beside Julian. Up close, she could smell the expensive cologne masking the reek of his opportunistic desperation.
"You think you hold all the cards because you traded up for a prosecutor's daughter," Clara said softly, her voice carrying a chilling clarity that made Julian take an involuntary half-step back. "You think my father’s corruption is your leverage. But you forgot one fundamental rule of corporate warfare, Julian."

Julian swallowed hard, his arrogant smirk faltering under her unyielding gaze. "What rule is that?"
"A parasite," Clara whispered, looking him dead in the eye, "only survives as long as the host is breathing. And right now... neither of you has a pulse."
