Chapter 8

While the deposition proceeded upstairs, federal investigators were executing a search warrant on Elena Rostova’s downtown loft apartment. Two agents in dark windbreakers systematically combed through her designer walk-in closet, confiscating laptops, hard drives, and a lockbox hidden behind a row of winter coats. Elena stood in the center of the living room, wearing a floral silk robe over her pink dress, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she glared at the lead investigator.
"You have no right to search my personal belongings without a specific warrant naming my independent business accounts!" Elena shouted, her voice echoing off the exposed brick walls of the loft.
Special Agent Miller did not even look up from the financial ledger he was scanning. "Ms. Rostova, your name is listed as the primary beneficiary on three separate shell company accounts funded directly by corporate embezzlement from Julian Vance’s engineering firm. That establishes probable cause across all shared and individual assets."
Elena’s face contorted with outrage. "Julian handled the finances! I am an independent consultant; I earned every dollar through legitimate design contracts!"
"Really? Because our forensic team traced six months of consulting fees back to dummy corporations that had zero employees, zero office space, and zero commercial output other than routing money straight to your personal boutique savings account," Agent Miller said smoothly, snapping the ledger shut. He looked at her with calm, professional indifference. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance has already provided a sworn statement detailing your direct involvement in structuring the offshore wire transfers."
Elena froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her pale and shaking beneath her makeup. "Julian... Julian said that?" she whispered, the betrayal hitting her with sudden, crushing force. She had spent the entire morning scheming how to pin the entirety of the federal fraud on Julian, fully expecting him to protect her out of lingering affection, only to discover he had beaten her to the punch.
" cooperación usually gets evaluated favorably by the prosecutor's office, Ms. Rostova, but loyalty among accomplices tends to expire the moment prison time becomes a certainty," Agent Miller noted dryly. He signaled to the other agents. "Bag the laptops and secure the lockbox. We're taking her down to the federal holding facility for questioning."
As the cold steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, Elena let out a sharp gasp of disbelief, her carefully curated world of luxury and entitlement shattering into a million jagged pieces. She had believed her charm, her beauty, and her manipulation would always shield her from the consequences of her choices. But reality had finally caught up, stripping away her armor and leaving her exposed to the unyielding weight of the law.

As they led her out of the loft toward the waiting unmarked vehicle, Elena caught a glimpse of her reflection in the lobby glass—rumpled hair, tear-streaked makeup, and handcuffs glinting under the fluorescent lights. The glamour was gone, replaced by the stark, humbling truth of accountability.
