Chapter 3

The courtroom smelled faintly of old paper, floor wax, and the quiet despair of a hundred broken families before them. Judge Thomas Henderson sat behind an elevated mahogany bench, his expression etched with decades of listening to bitter disputes. He adjusted his half-moon reading glasses, scanning the thick binder of financial statements, forensic accountant summaries, and emergency affidavits that Clara’s pro bono legal counsel had filed at dawn.
Clara took her seat at the plaintiff’s table, keeping the baby securely against her chest. The infant stirred momentarily, letting out a soft sigh before settling back into a deep, dreamless sleep. Clara gently stroked the edge of the white flannel, finding comfort in the rhythmic pulse of her child’s breathing. Across the aisle, Julian and Elena sat down together. Elena immediately began whispering frantically into Julian’s ear, sliding documents across the table with manic energy, while Julian stared blankly ahead at the wall, rubbing his sweaty palms against his white trousers.
"We are here for an emergency injunction and asset freeze," Judge Henderson began, his voice deep and steady, cutting through the nervous rustle of paper. He looked directly at Julian’s defense attorney, a sharp-suited man named Marcus Vance who was distantly related to Julian. "Counsel, I’ve reviewed the preliminary filings. The petitioner has presented documented evidence of systematic asset dissipation totaling over four hundred thousand dollars in marital funds transferred to unregistered shell companies during the past six months. How do you plead to these findings?"
Marcus stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, my client acknowledges certain administrative oversights in corporate restructuring, but—"
"Administrative oversights?" Judge Henderson interrupted, raising a single eyebrow. "Mr. Vance, we are talking about draining joint savings accounts while your client’s wife was heavily pregnant and unhoused. Do not insult the court's intelligence with corporate euphemisms."
Elena gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth, though her eyes flashed with indignation rather than remorse. She shifted in her pink dress, clearly itching to speak out of turn, but Marcus shot her a sharp, warning glance that kept her pinned to her chair.
Julian finally found his voice, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Your Honor, Clara knew about the investments. She agreed to—"
"I agreed to nothing of the sort," Clara said, her voice ringing out clearly in the quiet room. She did not raise her hand; she simply spoke with the quiet authority of someone holding undeniable proof.
Judge Henderson looked down at Clara, his stern expression softening slightly into one of cautious professional respect. "Mrs. Vance, you have legal representation present, but you are welcome to address the court regarding the immediate safety of the child named in the emergency guardianship petition."
Clara stood up slowly, ensuring the baby remained safe and stable in her arms. "Your Honor, the financial fraud is merely a symptom of a much larger danger. Mr. Vance and Ms. Rostova have actively hidden assets to prepare for my displacement and to deny the legal rights of this child. Furthermore, the physical intimidation outside these very doors demonstrates a pattern of volatile behavior that directly threatens the welfare of my newborn. I am requesting an immediate, indefinite freeze on all shared accounts, full physical custody of the infant pending genetic and legal establishment, and a mandatory restraining order."
Elena surged to her feet, her chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor. "That’s a lie! She’s manipulating the system because she’s jealous!"
"Sit down, Ms. Rostova, or I will have the bailiff remove you for contempt," Judge Henderson ordered, banging his gavel once with a resounding crack that echoed off the high ceiling.

Julian pulled Elena back down by the arm, his face pale with humiliation. The walls were closing in, and no amount of shouting could rewrite the paper trail Clara had spent months uncovering.
