Chapter 6

Across town, in a sleek, minimalist apartment that smelled of expensive scotch and cedarwood, Julian Vance was pouring himself a third drink of the evening. The ice cubes clinked loudly against the crystal tumbler as his hand shook uncontrollably. On the leather sofa opposite him, Elena was pacing back and forth across the imported wool rug, her pink dress rumpled and stained with spilled wine from her own frantic pacing.
"You are completely useless, Julian!" Elena snapped, turning on him with eyes blazing. "You sat there in the courtroom like a whipped dog while that judge froze every single asset we had! Do you have any idea how much cash we need to keep the New York accounts afloat?"
Julian slammed his glass down on the marble coffee table, liquid splashing over the rim. "Shut up, Elena! Just shut your mouth for five minutes!" he roared, his voice cracking with raw hysteria. "I tried to handle it! I built the offshore network, I falsified the statements, I did everything you demanded so we could start over! And now my entire life is dismantled because you couldn't control your temper in front of a courthouse security camera!"
Elena stopped pacing, her expression shifting from fury to cold disbelief. She walked over to him, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "My temper? You’re blaming me? You’re the coward who couldn't even tell your wife about the transfer of deeds before she hired a forensic accountant! You left a paper trail wide enough for a truck to drive through!"
"If you hadn't demanded the second sports car last month, the audit flag wouldn't have been tripped!" Julian yelled back, standing up and towering over her. "We spent money we didn't legally have yet! Clara didn't just guess; she had receipts for every single luxury purchase you made under my corporate expense account!"
The argument hung heavy in the stale air of the apartment. They had built their entire illicit relationship on a foundation of mutual greed and shared disdain for consequences, but now that the bills were coming due, the alliance was fracturing along its weakest seams. Trust, never present to begin with, evaporated entirely.
Elena pulled her phone from her pocket, her thumbs flying across the screen with venomous speed. "Fine. If you're going to fold like cheap paper, I'll handle my own defense. Marcus already said the corporate liability can be shifted entirely onto your primary signature. You authorized the transfers; I merely enjoyed the benefits. Legally, that makes you the primary architect of the fraud."
Julian stared at her, the blood draining from his face as the ultimate betrayal settled into his bones. "You're turning on me? After everything I sacrificed for you?"
"Survival isn't a betrayal, Julian. It's just good business," Elena said coldly, grabbing her designer handbag from the sofa. She walked to the door, pausing with her hand on the brass knob. "Don't call me. My lawyer will be in touch regarding the division of remaining liquid assets—whatever is left after the court takes its cut."

The door clicked shut behind her, leaving Julian alone in the silence of the empty apartment. He slumped back onto the leather sofa, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his total ruin finally crushed him.
