Chapter 10

The morning sun broke over the city with a crisp, clear brilliance that seemed to wash away the gloom of the previous weeks. Inside the family law courtroom, the gallery was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious onlookers eager to witness the conclusion of one of the most high-profile white-collar and custody disputes of the year.

Judge Henderson entered the courtroom promptly at nine o'clock, his expression solemn and focused. He reviewed the final forensic reports submitted by the court-appointed auditors, along with the damning personal ledger Marcus had dropped off at Clara’s doorstep—which Clara’s legal team had formally entered into evidence forty-eight hours prior.

Julian Vance sat at the defense table alone. Elena was absent, having been transferred to a federal detention facility upstate to await trial on multiple counts of conspiracy and wire fraud. Julian looked broken; his white trousers were stained at the hem, his blue shirt rumpled, and his posture caved inward as if he were trying to shrink out of existence. He did not look up when Clara walked down the center aisle, her floral dress replaced by a sharp, elegant charcoal-gray suit that projected absolute confidence and unwavering resolve.

Clara carried the baby—now alert, healthy, and wrapped in a clean white blanket—securely against her chest. She took her seat at the plaintiff’s table, surrounded by her legal team, and gently kissed the top of the infant’s dark, wispy hair.

"We are here for the final disposition of Case CV-8842-M," Judge Henderson announced, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "I have reviewed the forensic audits, the federal indictments against Ms. Rostova, and the newly uncovered personal ledgers submitted by the petitioner."

The judge paused, adjusting his glasses as he looked directly across the room at Julian.

"Mr. Vance, your systematic attempts to conceal marital assets, fabricate mental health claims against your spouse, and defraud federal regulatory bodies have been thoroughly documented. Furthermore, the petition for sole legal and physical guardianship filed by Mrs. Vance is supported by overwhelming evidence of your reckless and volatile behavior."

Julian raised his head slowly, his eyes red-rimmed and desperate. "Your Honor... please. I made mistakes. I was misled. I just want a chance to—"

"Mr. Vance, your opportunity to act as a partner and a father was squandered the moment you chose deceit over honesty," Judge Henderson interrupted, his tone unyielding. "The court hereby grants sole legal and physical custody of the child to the petitioner, Clara Hayes. Furthermore, all remaining marital assets, properties, and corporate holdings are awarded to Mrs. Vance as restitution for systematic financial fraud."

A low murmur rippled through the gallery. Julian slumped forward, burying his face in his hands as a dry, choked sob escaped his lips. The empire he had built on greed and betrayal had completely collapsed, leaving him with nothing.
