Chapter 7: Turning the Tables

Ethan didn't move. He kept his arm firmly around Clara’s trembling waist, using his own body as a shield between her and the drawn firearm. The absurdity of the situation struck him with fierce irony: the police had arrived, but because of his mother’s immense wealth and deep-rooted political connections, they were treating the victim as the criminal and the kidnapper as the victim.
“Detective Vance, look at the room,” Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute authority, cutting through the heavy silence of the nursery. He pointed directly at the oversized, custom-built white crib with its thick metal bars. “My mother locked my pregnant wife inside a custom-made prison cell for over a week. She staged this entire scenario. We are the victims here.”
Detective Vance flicked his gaze toward the cage, taking in the heavy vertical bars, the reinforced padlock lying on the floor, and the stark emptiness of the enclosure. A flicker of doubt crossed the officer's professional demeanor, but Beatrice stepped forward immediately, her voice dripping with practiced maternal concern.
“My son is deeply delusional, Detective,” Beatrice interjected smoothly, stepping between the officer and the crib. She managed to force a thin, trembling tear into the corner of her eye, a masterclass in psychological manipulation. “Clara suffered a severe psychotic break following her pregnancy complications. In my desperation to keep her safe from harming herself or her unborn child, I had temporary safety measures installed. Ethan was away on business and refused to accept the medical reality of her condition. Grief has warped his mind.”
“That is a complete lie!” Clara cried out, her voice cracking with raw emotion as she stepped out from behind Ethan. She pointed a shaking finger at her mother-in-law. “She starved me! She took my phone, locked me in that cage, and told me nobody would ever come looking for me!”
Detective Vance lowered his weapon slightly, looking back and forth between the two warring narratives. The complexity of the situation was staggering. On one side stood a prominent matriarch with extensive legal backing and medical documentation; on the other stood a distressed couple bearing the physical and emotional scars of captivity.
“Mrs. Sterling, I’m going to need to see those medical authorizations you mentioned,” Detective Vance said cautiously, keeping his hand near his holster. “And we need to get Mrs. Sterling to a hospital immediately for an independent evaluation.”
“Of course, Officer,” Beatrice agreed instantly, her composure returning with terrifying speed. She shot a cold, warning glance at Ethan. “My legal team will provide all necessary documentation at the station. However, I must insist that my grandson remains with the family physician for proper observation.”

“Over my dead body,” Ethan growled, stepping forward.
Before the situation could escalate into physical violence, a sharp wail echoed from the hallway below. The front doors swung open again, and uniform officers rushed up the stairs, shifting the power dynamic entirely. Ethan knew this was their only chance to break free from his mother’s suffocating grip once and for all.
