Chapter 5

The upstairs corridor was shrouded in deep shadows, illuminated only by the faint moonlight filtering through the tall arched windows. Ethan moved with absolute silence, his rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the thick Persian runner. He bypassed his own assigned bedroom, continuing down the dimly lit hallway toward his mother’s private study. The house was deathly quiet, save for the rhythmic ticking of antique clocks and the occasional low hum of the centralized climate control system.

Reaching the heavy oak door of the study, Ethan tested the brass handle. Locked, as expected. Beatrice left nothing to chance. However, Ethan knew a secret that his mother had long forgotten. When they had remodeled the estate ten years ago, the contractor—an old friend of the family—had installed a master bypass latch accessible from the adjoining maintenance closet to deal with frequent electrical failures.

Slipping into the cramped, dusty maintenance closet next door, Ethan felt along the wood-paneled wall until his fingers brushed against a small, concealed iron ring. With a firm pull, a hidden door swung inward with a faint, oiled click, revealing the dimly lit interior of his mother’s private sanctuary.

Ethan stepped through the hidden entrance, closing the panel carefully behind him. The air in the study smelled of old leather, expensive parchment, and Beatrice’s signature rose-scented perfume. He moved directly toward the massive mahogany desk that dominated the center of the room. The glowing green indicator light of the master security terminal pulsed softly in the corner, recording every camera angle in the house—including the live feed of the upstairs nursery.

Ethan glanced at the monitor. Clara was still sitting on the floor of the caged crib, leaning her head against the vertical bars, looking utterly exhausted. A surge of protective fury washed over him, driving away any lingering hesitation. He began searching the desk drawers methodically, bypassing financial portfolios and deed documents in frantic pursuit of the brass key.

Beneath a false bottom in the center drawer, his fingers brushed against cold metal. Ethan pulled it out into the dim light: a heavy, ornate brass key bearing the engraved crest of the Sterling estate. He let out a slow, shuddering breath of relief.

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed through the study. Ethan froze, his blood running cold. On the security monitor, a small red alert box flashed in the corner of the screen. A perimeter sensor on the ground-floor terrace had just been tripped. Someone—or something—had just breached the estate grounds.

Ethan pocketed the key instantly, his mind racing. Beatrice had likely set a secondary trap, or perhaps an uninvited variable had just entered the equation. Regardless of who was outside, he couldn't afford to waste another second. He slipped back through the hidden wall panel, locked it behind him, and sprinted down the darkened hallway toward the nursery, ready to face whatever stood between him and his wife.
