Chapter 6: The Uninvited Guest

Bursting back into the upscale nursery, Ethan found Clara still huddled inside the custom white crib, her wide eyes blinking up at him in terror as the distant sound of breaking glass echoed faintly from the lower floor. The sudden intrusion shattered the tense equilibrium of the estate, sending shockwaves through the quiet night. Clara gripped the vertical metal bars, her voice trembling as she whispered warnings into the dim room.
“Ethan... someone is in the house. I heard a window shatter down in the parlor.”
“I know,” Ethan said breathlessly, crossing the room in three long strides. He pulled the ornate brass key from his pocket, his hands shaking slightly as he aligned it with the heavy padlock concealed behind the decorative scrollwork of the crib’s gate. “Stay back from the door, Clara. I don't know who’s down there, but we are getting out of here right now.”
The lock clicked open with a satisfying mechanical snap. Ethan swung the heavy metal gate outward, casting it aside with a loud metallic clatter that echoed off the crystal chandelier. Without a moment’s hesitation, he dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms securely around Clara’s waist and lifting her gently to her feet. She winced, her legs weak from days of confinement, but she leaned into his strength, burying her face against his shoulder.
Before they could reach the double doors of the nursery, heavy footsteps pounded up the grand staircase. The rhythmic, urgent strides did not belong to the measured, elegant pace of Beatrice. These footsteps were heavy, erratic, and aggressive. A sharp, commanding voice rang out through the corridor, shattering the mansion's eerie stillness.
“Sterling! Drop whatever you’re doing and step away from the nursery!”
Ethan froze, his protective instincts flaring. That voice was not his mother’s. It belonged to Detective Vance of the city police department—a man Ethan had met once during a charity gala years ago. How the detective had traced them to this isolated estate remained a mystery, but realization dawned quickly: someone outside had noticed Clara’s disappearance and tipped off the authorities.
The double doors of the nursery flew open, slamming against the white walls with a deafening crash. Detective Vance stood in the doorway, his service weapon drawn and aimed steadily at the center of the room. Behind him, looking completely unfazed despite the police intrusion, stood Beatrice in her white business suit, her expression one of cold, calculating disappointment.
“Well, Detective,” Beatrice said smoothly, her voice dripping with venomous irony, “as you can see, my son is experiencing a severe domestic emergency involving a deeply disturbed individual. I told you my home was secure.”

Detective Vance kept his weapon trained on Ethan, his eyes darting between Ethan, the open cage, and Clara clinging desperately to her husband. The tension in the room was palpable, thick enough to suffocate.
“Mr. Sterling,” Detective Vance commanded sternly, keeping his finger resting safely alongside the trigger. “Step away from the woman and put your hands where I can see them. We received an anonymous distress call reporting a kidnapping at this address.”
