Chapter 9: The Breach at the Library

The mahogany doors of the grand library splintered inward with a deafening crash as the heavy oak frame gave way under the combined force of the intruders' breaching tools. Dust and wood fragments flew through the air as the two tactical operatives stepped into the moonlit room, their weapons raised and scanning the shadows with cold precision.

Marcus Vance stood near the center of the room, his pistol drawn and aimed squarely at the lead operative. ""End of the line, gentlemen. The authorities have already been alerted to this property.""

The lead operative didn't lower his weapon. His face was hidden behind a tactical balaclava, but his voice came out flat, modulated, and devoid of any human warmth. ""Step aside, Vance. The asset belongs to Sterling Capital. Interfering will only result in termination.""

""You're dealing with a federal kidnapping case now,"" Marcus replied, his stance unwavering as he tightened his grip on his weapon. ""Dr. Sterling's syndicate is finished. The papers are already being processed.""

Instead of answering, the second operative moved with lightning speed, lunging toward the bookshelf housing the hidden biometric panel of the panic room. Marcus fired a shot that clipped the operative's tactical vest, but the sheer momentum of the breach could not be stopped. The first operative returned fire, a suppressed crack echoing through the cavernous library as Marcus dropped to the floor, clutching his shoulder in agony.

""Marcus!"" Eleanor screamed silently from inside the safe room as she watched the horrific scene unfold on the live monitor. She reached instinctively for the emergency override switch on the wall console, debating whether to open the door and confront them directly.

Outside, the operative slammed his fist against the concealed wall panel, attempting to override the biometric lock with a portable decryption device. Sparks flew from the console as the advanced hardware tried to bypass the security encryption protecting Eleanor and the boys.

""Mom, what are we going to do?"" Julian whispered, his voice shaking as he watched the monitor. He looked at Leo, then down at the golden locket in his hand.

Leo’s eyes narrowed with a sudden, sharp clarity. He reached out and touched the hinge of the locket, remembering how he had found it tucked inside his rags the day he was abandoned on the church steps. ""The passcode,"" Leo said softly, pointing at the tiny engraved numbers along the inside rim of the locket casing—numbers Eleanor had never noticed before. ""The date we were born. Mom always said we were her twin suns.""

Julian’s eyes widened. He grabbed the locket, read the tiny numbers engraved beneath the photograph—*10-14-18*—and looked at the wall keypad inside the safe room.

Without hesitation, Julian walked over to the emergency communications console, bypassed the main lock, and punched the birth date into the manual override sequence.
