Chapter 10: Turning the Tables

The decryption device in the hallway suddenly flashed a bright, blinding red, and the emergency klaxons began to wail throughout the estate. The security system, recognizing the internal override code programmed directly from the matching antique locket, initiated a total structural lockdown. Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and doorway in the west wing, trapping the intruders inside the library while sealing the panic room behind an impenetrable second layer of titanium alloy.
The lead operative cursed loudly, kicking the reinforced wall in frustration as the decryption device short-circuited in a shower of sparks. ""Abort! The system's locked down. Reinforcements will be here any second!""
Inside the safe room, the heavy steel door hummed as its hydraulic seals locked firmly into place. Eleanor pulled Julian and Leo into a tight, protective embrace, exhaling a shuddering breath of relief as she watched the intruders retreat from the library on the security monitor, fleeing back toward the shattered conservatory windows before the local police sirens began wailing in the distance.
Marcus Vance staggered into view on the camera feed, pressing a hand against his wounded shoulder as he leaned against the doorframe, giving Eleanor a weak thumbs-up to signal he was alive.
""They're gone,"" Eleanor whispered, tears of profound relief streaming down her cheeks. She looked down at her two boys, marveling at their courage. It was Leo’s keen observation of the locket's hidden engraving that had saved them all.
""You did that,"" Eleanor said, looking directly at Leo with immense pride and affection. ""You saved us.""
Leo looked down shyly, rubbing the back of his neck. ""I just... I remembered the numbers from when I used to hold the locket in the alley. It felt important.""
Julian smiled proudly, wrapping an arm around his brother’s shoulders. ""We make a pretty good team, don't we?""
""The best,"" Leo agreed softly.

The wailing sirens grew louder, pulling closer to the estate gates as local law enforcement and federal investigators arrived to secure the perimeter. The nightmare that had haunted Eleanor for six years was finally coming to an end, replaced by the dawn of a new reality where her family was finally whole again.
