Chapter 5: The Physician's Ledger

The evening shadows lengthened across the manicured lawns of the estate as Eleanor set her plan into motion. She could not trust the police immediately—not when the corruption ran deep enough to infiltrate a premier private medical institution six years ago. Instead, she turned to the only person she knew who operated outside the conventional channels: Marcus Vance, a retired corporate investigator and a trusted old friend of her late husband.
Marcus arrived within the hour, stepping into the grand foyer with the quiet, observant air of a man who missed nothing. Eleanor had settled the boys in the upstairs nursery, where a bewildered domestic staff was hurriedly drawing a warm bath for Leo and laying out spare clothes from Julian’s wardrobe that miraculously fit him almost perfectly.
""Eleanor, you look like you’ve seen a ghost,"" Marcus said quietly as she led him into the study and locked the heavy oak door behind them.
""I have, Marcus. Actually, I’ve seen two,"" Eleanor replied, her voice taut. She placed the antique golden locket and the hospital records on the mahogany desk between them. ""Leo is alive. He is Julian's twin brother. They stole him from the delivery room and told me he died.""
Marcus stared at the documents, his expression hardening as he flipped through the faded pages bearing the letterhead of the St. Jude Private Maternity Center. He traced a finger over the signature of Dr. Harrison Sterling, the renowned obstetrician who had overseen Eleanor’s delivery.
""Sterling retired three years ago and relocated to a private estate in Vermont,"" Marcus noted, his analytical mind immediately connecting the dots. ""If what you're saying is true, this wasn't just a rogue doctor. This was an operation. High-end clients paying exorbitant fees for designer infants, while unwanted or surplus children were quietly disposed of or funneled into trafficking networks to cover their tracks.""
Eleanor gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white. ""Why leave Leo on a church step then? Why not sell him too?""
""Because something went wrong with his medical chart that night,"" Marcus suggested grimly, tapping the edge of the doctor's notes. ""Look here—there’s a handwritten marginalia note scribbled in code. 'Developmental anomaly observed post-delivery; quarantine recommended.' They probably thought he wouldn't survive the night, or that his condition made him unsellable. Instead of disposing of him cleanly, someone panicked and dropped him where he'd be found quickly, washing their hands of the liability.""
A wave of nausea hit Eleanor. To think of her tiny newborn baby discarded like trash because of a corporate evaluation chilled her to the core. ""I want them exposed, Marcus. Every single person involved. I want Dr. Sterling, and I want whoever financed this syndicate.""
""It’s going to be dangerous, Eleanor,"" Marcus warned, looking her dead in the eye. ""People with that kind of money don't give up easily. They covered their tracks for six years. When they realize Leo has resurfaced and you're digging into their past, they will push back.""
May you like
""Let them try,"" Eleanor said, her voice steady and resolute. ""They took one of my sons once. I will burn their entire world to the ground before I let them touch either of them again.""
