Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

Downstairs in the study, the digital clock glowed midnight, casting an eerie blue light across the scattered documents on the mahogany desk. Marcus Vance sat hunched over his laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he hacked into the encrypted financial archives of the defunct St. Jude Private Maternity Center.
The audit trail was a labyrinth of shell companies, offshore accounts, and falsified medical board filings. But wealth left tracks, and institutional corruption always left a paper trail for someone patient enough to follow it. Marcus tracked a series of massive quarterly wire transfers originating from a Swiss holding company directly into the personal accounts of Dr. Harrison Sterling and the clinic's former administrator, Arthur Pendelton.
He traced the holding company further up the chain, navigating through three layers of corporate anonymity until he hit a familiar name: Sterling Capital Holdings—a venture capital firm currently managed by none other than Richard Sterling, Harrison’s estranged nephew and a prominent philanthropist in the city’s elite financial circles.
Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his tired eyes. Richard Sterling was not just a financier; he was a major donor to the very hospital board where Eleanor sat as a prominent trustee. The conspiracy wasn't buried in some dark, seedy underworld; it was woven into the very fabric of high society, hidden behind tailored suits, charity galas, and pristine reputations.
Suddenly, a sharp beep echoed from his laptop screen. A security alert flashed red across the monitor.
*Intrusion detected on local perimeter network.*
Marcus cursed under his breath, leaning forward to check the security camera feeds covering the estate's sprawling grounds. On the monitor, the infrared cameras picked up two dark figures moving silently through the manicured hedges near the western perimeter wall. They weren't burglars looking for silver or electronics; they moved with military precision, avoiding the automated floodlights and sticking to the deep shadows of the oak trees.
They were looking for Leo.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He slammed the laptop shut, grabbed his encrypted burner phone, and dialed Eleanor’s direct extension. The phone rang twice before Eleanor’s tense voice answered on the other end.
""Marcus? What is it?""
""We’ve been compromised, Eleanor,"" Marcus said urgently, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. ""They know Leo is here. Two operatives are on the grounds right now, moving toward the west wing. We need to move the boys out of the house immediately.""
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the receiver. ""How did they find us so fast?""
""Sterling Capital Holdings. They own the entire network,"" Marcus replied, already pulling a compact pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine. ""Get the boys into the panic room behind the library. I'll hold them off and secure the perimeter.""
May you like
""No, Marcus, we do this together,"" Eleanor insisted, her voice steeling with determination. ""I am done running from them.""
