Chapter 7: The Boardroom Coup

While Julian wrestled with his demons in self-imposed exile, the corporate world of Vance Enterprises continued its ruthless march. Two days after the gala, the mahogany-paneled boardroom on the fortieth floor hummed with tension. Marcus Vance sat at the head of the long conference table, adjusting his gold-plated fountain pen as the senior executives murmured anxiously among themselves.
""Gentlemen,"" Marcus began, his voice smooth and authoritative. ""As you are all aware, Julian’s recent personal matters have created a... temporary distraction. In light of his current emotional instability and the pending dissolution of his marriage, it is imperative that we stabilize leadership to protect shareholder value.""
The door at the far end of the boardroom clicked open. All heads turned. Julian walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray suit, his posture rigid and his eyes sharp and focused. He looked exhausted, but the hollow desperation of the past few days had been replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.
""Good morning, Marcus,"" Julian said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. ""I wasn't aware we were holding an emergency executive session without the CEO's authorization.""
Marcus stiffened, recovering quickly with a patronizing smile. ""Julian, we were just discussing business continuity. Given your... public indiscretion at the Grandview Hotel, the board has legitimate concerns regarding your fitness to lead.""
""My fitness to lead this company is a matter for the board to vote on, not for you to orchestrate behind my back while scavenging like a vulture,"" Julian replied smoothly, walking to the head of the table and placing his hands firmly on the back of the chairman’s chair. He looked around the room, meeting the eyes of every senior partner. ""I have made mistakes in my personal life—mistakes of which I am deeply ashamed, and which I am currently addressing. But let me be entirely clear: my family issues have zero bearing on my commitment to Vance Enterprises.""
""And your wife?"" one of the senior partners, an elderly man named Arthur Pendelton, asked gravely. ""Word is she’s filing for sole custody. A messy public trial could devastate our upcoming merger with the Sterling Group.""
Julian swallowed hard, the memory of Lily’s tearful face flashing through his mind. He didn't flinch. ""There will be no messy trial, Arthur. I am granting Clara everything she asks for. Sole custody, unhindered property settlements, and complete autonomy. I will not drag my family through the mud of corporate litigation.""
Marcus frowned, sensing his carefully laid trap collapsing. ""You're giving up the custody fight? Just like that? Julian, you're handing her leverage—""
May you like
""I am doing the only honorable thing left for my daughter,"" Julian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an undeniable authority that silenced his brother entirely. ""Meeting adjourned.""
