Chapter 4: The Legal Reality

The morning sun filtered through the sheer linen curtains of the master study, casting long, geometric shadows across the mahogany desk where Clara sat reviewing financial portfolios. The silence in the house was heavy, broken only by the faint clinking of cutlery from the kitchen where the housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, was preparing breakfast for Lily. The events of the previous night felt like a surreal nightmare, yet the legal reality of their situation loomed large and undeniable.
A sharp, resolute knock sounded at the front door. A moment later, Mrs. Gable ushered in Marcus Vance—Julian’s older brother and corporate attorney—carrying a sleek leather briefcase. Marcus possessed the same sharp jawline as Julian, but his eyes lacked any warmth, replaced instead by a cold, calculating ambition.
""Clara,"" Marcus said smoothly, offering a tight, professional smile that didn't reach his eyes. ""I trust you’re holding up after... the unfortunate incident.""
""Cut the pleasantries, Marcus,"" Clara said without looking up from her papers. ""If you’re here representing Julian, save your breath. The locks have been changed, the staff has been instructed, and divorce papers are being drawn up as we speak.""
Marcus set his briefcase on the edge of the desk and took a seat without being invited. ""Julian is a wreck. He hasn't slept, he hasn't eaten, and he’s threatening to do something reckless at the board meeting tomorrow. But more importantly, Clara, we need to discuss asset distribution and custody.""
""Custody?"" Clara slammed the folder shut, her eyes flashing with ice. ""Julian forfeited any right to custody the moment he physically assaulted our daughter in front of three hundred witnesses. The hotel security footage is already secured.""
""Footage that remains private, for now,"" Marcus noted smoothly, crossing his legs. ""Julian is still a major shareholder in Vance Enterprises. A public scandal involving child abuse allegations—even if exaggerated in the heat of a social setting—would tank the stock. It’s in everyone's interest to handle this quietly. Sole custody for you, generous financial settlement, non-disclosure agreements signed across the board. In exchange, Julian gets visitation rights, supervised, of course.""
Clara stood up, walking slowly to the window that overlooked the manicured lawn where Lily was quietly playing with a golden retriever. ""Supervised visitation? You think I would ever allow a man who rejects our child with such casual cruelty anywhere near her again? You don't know my daughter, Marcus. You don't know what it took to build this family while Julian was chasing shadows and listening to pathetic gossips like you.""
Marcus’s expression hardened, the corporate mask slipping slightly. ""Don't underestimate Julian, Clara. He may be broken right now, but he is a Vance. If you push him into a corner with no access to Lily, he will fight you with every resource at his disposal. And he has deep pockets.""

""Let him try,"" Clara said softly, turning back to face her brother-in-law. ""A father who hates his own flesh and blood because of a whisper has already lost the war.""
